Hi all, i'm just looking at pricing up a high end laptop.

Requirements will be

Mobile I7 Processor family
12GB RAM
2 X HDD Space
Large Battery Capacity
Screen Size ideally 17" but smaller or larger would be fine

It will be used mostly for VM's, Photoshop, Lightroom etc, maybe occasional gaming but I'm not really fussed about that, so no need for any sort of high end GPU

Anyone been in the same boat?

What's out there?

whats your budget? for true high-end workstations look into the Dell Precision Range or Lenovo T or W-series :)

No budget for the moment, cost potentially not an issue, also are i7 macbooks out soon?

you don't want a macbook if you're going ultra-high-end. trust me.

i have to say, in my experience, top-end Core2Duos and Quads are still faster than laptop-i7's

look at the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds, it's got a 3.06GHz Core2Quad, 17" widescreen AND a retractable 10" portrait- screen to the right of the main-screen, as well as Dual internal hard drives, a built-in graphics tablet right on the palmrest and, the best feature of all, a built-in colour calibration device for the screen!

Seems odd that you are looking for something very high powered yet are concerned about battery life. What you're describing is a mobile workstation and in reality will need to be plugged in.

thats fine, but it will need the ability to run for a reasonable amount of time in power saving mode, for when I'm out and about.

You're going to be wanting to look at something like the Clevo D900F I think it is. Reason I recommend is I believe it supports 12/16GB (although 4GB SODIMMs will not be cheap), 2/3 HDDs, but more importantly takes a desktop I7 processor. You arent going to get something much stronger. You will likely be looking at about 3-4 grand for this level of setup all tricked out though. I think Kobalt may sell them and would recommend them.
The laptops in this power range will only last about 45mins on battery though, if you want top power there are compromises to make it attainable.

Or you could go with a one of the Kobalt customizable laptops.

I've just recently ordered a Kobalt Comanche 17” which has a Intel quad core desktop I7 processor - You can choose from i7 920, 950 and Extreme 975 Core I7 desktop processors as well as 12GB RAM support and a NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 280M notebook GPU. It's not much of a looker compared to their other laptops - I wasn`t too much bothered about how the laptop looks on the outside as it's the power in the inside that counts - but It's quite powerfull especially when used for multitasking, multithreaded apps.

You can find more information on their laptops on their website.

Bar additional info you've just repeated what I already said. Kobalt's laptops are all based on Clevo chassis, the Comanche is the D900 based model.
