Hi all,
having managed to get a nice, well-paid job over the summer, i've decided that it's a good time to replace my ageing 12.1" work laptop.

currently i've got a Toshiba U205 (12.1" screen with 2 inches of bezel , 1.83GHz T5600 etc) which is okay, but the battery life has become appaling - managing 30 minutes with the screen at 1/4 brightness.

because i take my laptop with me every day at uni, i'm really looking for something with similar weight and dimensions, so, less than 1.8KG, max 13" screen.

similarly, because my work involves running VM's and cracking passwords, it needs a reasonably speedy processor and 2GB of ram minimum.

i've been looking at Lenovo/IBM X61 and X200's, as well as Dell Latitude E4300's, but i've been constrained to looking at factory-refurbs and 2nd hand units because of my budget, which is £700 at an absolute maximum, and less is definitely preferred.

so, i'm looking for advice/reccomendations, although i'd prefer to stay away from brands like Acer/Advent etc...

in Summary: (for the tldr people)
  • well built laptop, 13" screensize or smaller
  • 2GB ram minimum
  • reasonably fast CPU required
  • good battery life needed
  • £700 absolute maximum.

Base spec white macbook is £644(ish) with the HE discount (higher education) if your still at uni....

They are nice (or you could have a nosey at the refurb store thing to look for a 13 inch pro as they might be in budget)

13" isn't really classed as ultraportable, and they'll all likely be heavier than 1.8KG anyway.

The Dell Vostro 1220 might be worth a look, and HP do a couple of 12" offerings too. Not sure if Lenovo would have anything in your budget, but they're obviously worth a look.

hehehe, managed to snag a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 from ebay for just £700 :D

problem solved i guess :)

hehehe, currently sat on top of the Studio using my X200 on it's built-in HSDPA after having fixed my location using the built in GPS, and i'm typing this post using the illumination provided by the built-in thinklight.

suck on that, Dell.
