I'm thinking of getting an ultrawide monitor and thought it would be best to post in the gaming forums as gaming on an ultrawide monitor is what I have questions about, here's the list:

  • Do games have the correct resolution to choose by default?
  • Is FOV a problem?
  • Do you ave to search for hacks to get the right FOV and resolution?
  • How is it when watching 1080p content, do the bars at the side distract?
  • Will a 3770k and overclocked 290 be enough to make use of an ultrawide?

Any other tips also welcome :)

From my experience with the Dell U2913WM most games worked fine with it presenting the correct resolution and having proper FOV, etc. but there were a few (mostly older) games where the resolution wasn't available or needed to be setup manually by editing config files with a text editor. There were also 1-2 newer games where the resolution would cause issues with for instance shadow maps being incorrectly projected.

I didn't find the bars at the side that distracting but I'd prefer not to have them ideally.

I gamed on it with both a Q9550 and GTX470 SLI and an i7 4820K w/ GTX780 without any major considerations performance wise.

Quite a few of these kind of panels can do higher Hz than their 16:9 variants which is worth checking and can be a nice little bonus for gaming use i.e. mine does 75Hz without any issues at all.

To be frank though for me it did not replace either my 1920x1080 120Hz TFT for gaming or my 2560x1440 panel for other uses and currently is stuck on a VESA arm mount out of the way and doesn't get much use. (I sometimes rotate it around so I can watch a movie, online stream, etc. from bed).

- most games do support the res.
- nope, some games don't properly support it but this program pretty much fixes those issues for the games that don't support the FOV properly - http://www.flawlesswidescreen.org/
- not at all tbh, for film watching, I will zoom in so there are no black bars at the side, you don't lose too much from the top and bottom
- depends what res. of screen you go for, if 2560x1080, no problems at all, if the 3440x1080, you might need to drop a setting or two

Honestly, I can't go back to 16.9/16.10, 21.9 is just so much more immersive. If you are seriously into your FPS shooters, then 144HZ TN will be better but for casual gamers, these panels are perfectly fine imo.
