What do you guys think? I'm really so so tempted to buy a new CPU / MB / RAM... but can't make the choice.

I'm running 4GB DDR2, on a Q6600... It's okay for now and all, but next year I've basically told myself I will learn video editing / other stuff. I use photoshop a lot, but want to do larger projects.

Also for gaming, but I'm a bit busy ATM for games, but will eventually upgrade my old 4850... I'm probably going to do it in feb time though. I'm in no real rush for that, though I do want to, I think I'll wait for the new ATI cards and maybe see what happens with NV as I said, I'm in no real rush.

Now here's the rub, I know about Sandy... I'm also not sure what to do:

Buy:

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Foxconn Quantum Force Flaming Blade GTI Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Triple Channel (GB36GB1333C7TC)

OR wait... I could do with waiting as xmas gifts and all of that stuff, but could buy if needed.

Only thing is, sandy is out next month. But I'm missing out on HT... and 2GB of ram... though I guess I could offset that by buying another 4GB of ram.

I know the logical thing to do is likely wait, but need a bit of a nudge here? :(

if you want the rig get it, i understand people saying wait and all that...but in this biz if you always wait you get nowhere. the sandy chips arent going to be massively different from the current crop and the i7 will last you years.

theres no games that will take advantage of an i7 let alone any mhz increase from sandy, its only in apps. and tbh the difference there from sandy and i7 are gonna be pretty minimal, infact i wouldnt be surprised if i7 holds it own on a lot of stuff.

just go for it...you wont regret it.

a q6600 is a great chip but compared to i5/i7 its nothing..

As far as I'm aware, the 2600K will cost a lot more than the current I7's though?

Good point, had a look around and expected prices are anywhere between £260-440  However it could push down the prices of current i7s so would say its still worth waiting.

Yes, it does look like the 2600K will cost around £260, so a fair bit more than what the i7 950 currently costs.

However, it is faster clock-for-clock than the 950, clocked higher at stock and seems to overclock much better. Hence the premium and the wait can be justified if you need a CPU that is faster in CPU-heavy tasks.

That said, there is no doubt that the current i7s are blazingly fast chips - and the current prices of X58 motherboards are great. If you don't want to wait or pay the extra for the i7 SB, then an i7 950 rig will be very quick. I would suggest going for this motherboard over the foxconn though, its only £10 more.

Basically?

I'm going to think about it over the next few hours... I really think I should just buy. But there's that part of me saying "BUY SANDY!"
