A mate of mine's laptop has thrown in the towel, and before he reinstalls Windows XP, he's asked me to get some data off the drive.

I've put the IDE drive into a caddy and plugged it into my PC, but his userprofile under the C:\Documents and Settings folder is inaccessible, it says "Access Is Denied". All other folders on the C: partition are accessible.

He does have a password applied to this account, is this what's stopping us access it? If I view the Properties of the folder there isn't anything to do with Security available to view so I can't actually change anything to get access.

Any ideas or ways around this?

I don't get an advanced tab when I look at the security options.

I'm the Admin on my PC (his HD is plugged in via a USB caddy), and to be honest I did expect to get some more options regarding the security of the folder in question.

Sorry mate, I'm with you now.

I get 'Sharing and Security' having right-clicked, then an Advanced button, but no option to take control, just Archive and Index Attributes and Compress or Encrypt Attributes.

Not doing so well here am I?

I don't get a security tab having selected Properties, although I expected to see one.

I'm definitely the Admin on my PC, I've checked in User Accounts, but I don't get any options to fiddle folder permissions on any folders on my PC, so something's obviously not right.

It's a user profile under Docs & Settings, there's only that, Guest and All Users within Docs and Settings. I can open Guest and All Users, but not this folder.
