Unable to change proxy settings.

My friends laptop started saying proxy server not responding when IE or chrome opens and wont connect to the internet.

I went in to LAN setting to see that the 'auto detect settings' button wasn't ticked.

I ticked it and pressed OK but it wont save the setting. I am running as administrator with all permissions, anybody know why?

Proxy server radio button should not be ticked anyway. Sounds like it's something else causing problems.

Could possibly be malware/security software of some sort forcing the proxy settings, try rebooting with only Windows services enabled, no other services or startup items, and see what happens.
