I've created my google account and I'm signed in but I can't access the play store. I am greeted with a screen that has my email at the top with a menu as follows

Where are all the apps?

I'm also getting the server error message I'm on WIFI with internet access. I have also checked for updates but says no updates available. It is an older phone with an older version of android but things should work.

The phone is a Panasonic FZ-N1

I think the version of Android I have is too old & outdated to run the Playstore... I'm a bit stuck, I can't even set a wallpaper I have Android 5.1.1 with security patch. I need to update?

I can't do anything on this phone.

Anybody know how to update it?

I think your right it would seem like Android 6 is the only update providing there is a way to get it on to the phone. At the moment its pretty much useless as a smart phone, the camera is about all that really works and making & receiving calls no youtube app, no apps at all. I can't use the GPS or the barcode scanner I can check emails tho. Its a shame because it is a nice military phone. I wonder if theres a way to get Windows on it... or even Linux?

Windows won't work due to ARM instead of x86 (yes I know there's now Windows on Snapdragon, but there's no public image), and I doubt even Linux would run nicely on that.

I would just return the phone. An alternative is to get a normal modern smartphone and get a very thick case.

It looks like there was a "Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise" version called the FZ-F1 with otherwise identical specs.

That said the device is pretty old and even by 2016 standards the specs aren't great, so it hardly seems worth the effort to try to brute-force it into being up-to-date.

I don't know what I did but something popped up about finishing updates and now I can access the play store and install apps. :)

Even though this phone is pretty dated I really like it because its durable and water proof, you can drop it in mud or whatever and it wont harm the phone. Its perfect for camping and hiking with and now I can use the GPS which is fantastic. The specs aren't too bad neither, performance is reasonable and Amazon still sell this for an eye watering 800 plus pounds.

I would be interested if Panasonic released a later version preferably something in the last 4 years.

I would love to get the Juggernaut case for this phone it looks so cool, and then I can just clip it onto my backpack.

I think its possible to bring the system up to Android 11 but its a slow process because you can't go from Android 5 to 11. I saw a Panasonic FZ-N1 running Android 11 in my google searches, however with internal storage only being 8GB or 7.5GB it doesn't leave a whole lot of room for all the updates unless somehow the updates can be sent to the micro SD card rather than the phones internal storage... lots of things to figure out and work around.

For the time being I'm happy with the way it is for now as long as things are working that is all I really need.
