Unable to install OS

Hi there,

Yesterday I purchased http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-035-OB and have subsequently installed it all today. The problem occurs whilst trying to install an operating system.

With Windows XP disc is in, goes through the formatting/setup screen, restarts. I have to go into Bios once it does the first restart to change boot order otherwise it just hangs on the 'Press any key to boot from CD....'. However, when it tries to do it from the harddrive I always get:

Loading Operating System ...
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I have googled the issue and some are suggesting it might be due to BIOS settings or being outdated? I have tried installing XP more than once.

I have now tried installing my brothers copy of Windows 7 to see if that works however it hangs on Expanding Windows Files at 0% and after around 25mins throws up an error message, Error Code 0x80070017.

Is there any ideas as to what is causing this and what I should try to fix it? I have posted in the OCuk matters forums but ofcourse I doubt I'll get an official response out of hours. I have 2 Hdds, and 1 disc drive. The drive i'm trying to install to is IDE which is connected to the mobo using same cable which dvd drive is attached to.

Tried a different cable, the drive and HDD I'm trying to install from/to is IDE both on same cable which I have tried 2 different ones. They show up on Bios as:

IDE Channel 4 Master: DVD drive
IDE Channel 4 Slave: Hdd

Does the Hdd have to be master? If so is it just as simple as switching the cable round or is there something else that needs doing?

Edit: switched cable round and neither showed up in the bios.

Its been a while since I installed onto IDE drives, so had to look this up... http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confJumpering-c.html

You seems are correct in thinking the HDD needs to be the "Master" for your setup. You will need to move the "jumpers" on each drive to set the HDD as Master and the DVD as Slave (you can't have two masters on the same cable).

it wont matter in which order they are connected to the cable, the hdd will have a bank of 8pins on it, if i remember correctly, with a black plastic jumper pin. somewhere on the hdd it will show you how to attach this pin so that the hdd is configured as the master. the dvd drive should have the same set of pins and jumper connector.
 
Disable the floppy drive. I have a Gigabyte mobo and when I went to install Win7, it was taking ages and crashing and all sorts.

Disabled the floppy and bam, it went straight in.
 
I have Floppy set to none, I assume that's the same as disabled.

Edit: Will try and play around with the back of the drives in a bit

Think setting master=hdd/slave=dvd will sort it out.

Just googled the error code and it could be your dvd drive is not reading the disc properly.

You could try installing from a usb stick. (Guide)
 
Well windows xp has got to the setup stage which is good news, at least i'll be able to backup stuff from my 2nd drive! I think that fixed from changing the drivers from the DVD drive and HDD.

Windows 7 is still playing up, got to 68% last night and stopped. Got to 65% today and stopped, sometimes doesnt work at all. Tried to use the disc to make a bootable USB but had a driver error or something? So I reckon the disc or iso used was dodgy will have to redownload it from MS.
