Hi all,

As the title says i cannot install windows Vista either 32 bit or 64 bit as windows setup will not allow me to load the drivers for AHCI from Intel. The setup complains that it cannot find a compatible disk to install on.

If i set the bios to ide mode for the intel controller Vista installs fine but then i lose performance as the SATA functions are not enabled - anybody else had this problem with the P5B Deluxe etc. This is really frustrating - i even tried loading RC1 build with the same problem.Anybody got any ideas on this one.

Btw i have also tried connecting to both the black and red SATA connectors on the board - but no difference. If i can't solve this issue i cannot see me upgrading which is a shame.

It was the same for me with XP, I could never find out how to get Windows to work with AHCI enabled.

If you don't load any drivers during setup the HDDs should still be seen, and you should be able to install Vista then install the AHCI drivers when Vista is installed, this is what i did.

Also if you have more than one HDD and load the drivers during setup, the boot files seem get put on to a different HDD than the one you are installing Vista to, hense not being able to boot to the HDD on which you want to install Vista.

Are you sure it's the Intel controller giving you grief?

I have a similar board - P5B-E Plus, and the problem was the JMicron controller not being recognised by Vista, so it couldn't find the CD drive. The latest BIOS update cures this - Asus released a load of stuff on the 29th Jan, and if there's a BIOS update for your board I'd strongly recommend installing it - it's doubtless got a lot of Vista specific fixes.

Hi D.Chatten,

Thanks for the reply, but if you notice from my earlier post Vista does see the hard drive, but won't allow me to install either with or without loading the driver at setup stage - just complains it cannot find a compatible disk to install to & that it might not boot and to check the controller is enabled in bios. I have tried to install with only the one hard disk attached as i did not wan't my xp install on the other drive to be possibly affected.

I should also mention i am using a samsung SATA dvdrw drive which works fine.

Any other ideas?

Hi csmager,

thanks for the reply. I can tell you that my j micron controller is disabled in the bios as i am running an entirely SATA setup.I have a samsung dvdrw drive which works fine. I am also running the latest bios for the P5B(1004).

I find it very odd that vista will install fine with the intel controller set to ide, but it just won't have AHCI - surely others with the P5B or similar boards using the same chipset would have come across this issue?

Have you any more ideas on this one?

Cheers

It looks like Asus released a bios update for the P5B Deluxe & P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP to solve issues with AHCI mode, you could try updating the bios the latest version on the Asus website, it may solve the problem.

Hi again,

Nope - already running bios version 1004.I didn't see any mention of fixes to AHCI issues - perhaps i need glasses, but thanks for your input again.

The fix was implimened in bios 0910 so it will also be in 1004, sorry it didn't help, have you tried the latest drivers from the intel website, link below.

Intel® Matrix Storage Manager

Read section 7.2 in the readme file to find out how to extract the driver files, if you cant understand the readme the just do the following.

1) Dowload the iata621_enu.exe file to your C: drive

2) Click Start > Run, and type c:\iata621_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\AHCI

3) Navigate to the folder that you extracted the files to C:\AHCI and you will see a folder named Driver which is the 32bit drivers, also there will be a folder named Driver64 which is the 64bit drivers.

4) Choose the drivers you want 32bit or 64bit and opoen the folder and save all the driver files in the folder to a Floppy/CD or USB drive.

5) Try to load these new drivers during setup to see if it solves the problem.

Problem solved everyone(looks sheepish)

Hi all,

Just to let you know - it turns out that there was a problem with the hard drive i was trying to install to - despite the fact that this drive had not been giving problems.

When i installed using the raptor the install went through no problem - didn't even need to load drivers.

Thanks to everybody who helped.

Cheers
