Firstly Hello to everybody :)

Im looking for any help or ideas as to a problem i have. I have done a bit over searching around the net, but no joy.

My system was running fine, Until one day a few weeks ago when after booting ip there was no windows XP Logon Screen(the screen after the splash screen),so i decided the do a fresh install.

After adjusting the settings in Bios to Boot from CD, windows starts install Then F6 to install the raid drivers. Then windows continues to install other drivers, Windows then says it is loading (bottom left of screen).

Then it hangs at this screen (The Num,Cap and Scroll Lock all Flash) and the CD rom Spins down.

I have tried the following things to resolve this probelm but to no avail.

Hard drives formated in another PC (Windows Installs on this rig)
New DVD Rom
Another Copy of Win XP Home(bought cause i though disk was damaged).
New Ram.

I have a *cough cough* Copy of Win XP Pro which install on the above rig. (but for the *Cough cough reasons i cannot use this disk).

Im fairly capable with PC's, but i just cannot understand this problem. Why would XP Pro Install, but not Home.

My System is as follows

Opteron 146 (None Clocked at Moment)
MSi K8N Plat Mobo
MSi X800XL GFX Card
1gb Geil Ram.
Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
2 x 120Gb Seagate (not too sure of the model)Sata 1 Drives
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS Plat
Tagan TG580-U22 580W PSU

Any and all help is appreciated

Test your memory just in case (yes bad memory can do this) http://www.memtest86.com/

I trust you are using raid? (you dont need to install drivers if your not)

If so, look here but I would ignore the Single Drive Setup. (assuming you are using raid)

Test your memory just in case (yes bad memory can do this) http://www.memtest86.com/ Tested and all OK, have even tried new ram

I trust you are using raid? (you dont need to install drivers if your not) Yes im using a raid array

If so, look here but I would ignore the Single Drive Setup. (assuming you are using raid)Cheers for the link, and after reading that, i now sure im settingup my array correctly

Try running just one stick of RAM.

I had some problems in Widows, but not memtest, when running with two sticks in one of my systems, and that was after it had apparantly been running OK for ages too...

Try running just one stick of RAM. Done this, i have also used other ram as well.

Still no joy with getting this running. It's got me totally stumped.

Yeah shows as a 231(i think)gb Health array.

Why can i install Xp Pro, and NOTXp Home, everything that has been suggested allows Pro but not Home.

Though it might have been a borked Boot Sector(Windows URL suggested this), but drives have been reformatted and checked on another pc and windows installs on that PC.

as a last resort you could use the other pc to install to drives and then swap that in. Have you triedn installing in non RAID?

Ok gave the non RAID Method a go last night, and still no Joy with XP Home, but installs with Xp Pro

Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Anybody wanna buy slightly knackered PC

Is the Windows XP Home the upgrade or perhaps even OEM version? You might try installing Win98 first and seeing if you can then upgrade with your XP disks.

It is also possible to install XP Home over XP Pro though it is quite obscure and not recommended.

Good luck.

if its xp home upgrade all you need to do after the disk is formated is
A) insert xp home upgrade disk let it run
B) it will ask you something about error need to verify copy or something like that stick in your windows 2000/ 98 se follow the instruction then if i remember it will ask you to replace the disk with the xp disk and let it run.

Well the one thing it would appear you have'nt changed is the IDE cable and the CD/DVD drive reading the install disk, perhaps swapping those is worth trying?......
