that doesn't make sense but I know what you mean :D

Have you got a local firewall?

try using a cross over network cable and plug directly into each other, forget about router at moment... then make sure both have same Ip range... i.e 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and both with subnet 255.255.255.0 for instance...

then make sure both are on same workgroup.. i.e WORKGROUP or MSHOME. and disable the firewall on both O/S's... then you can work back up to using the router and so on

check you havent got windows firewall/other firewall blocking ping requests.

are you using wireless at all? if so check you havent got the option that stops comms between clients on.

dont bother with a crossover cable thats a waste of time.

Couldnt agree more!!! I spent many many hours trying to link two pcs together with a crossover cable. Followed all the guides and tried everything.

If you really must use a cross over cable you will need these settings put on the two machines:

Machine 1:

IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS 1: 192.168.0.1

Machine 2:

IP 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

(Although the Gateway and DNS settings are not essential I always put them in anyway!)

You mean you can't ping the pc from the laptop? ......... firewalls? ip settings? workgroup?

The Windows firewall by default blocks ICMP, so unless you disable it or add a rule to allow ICMP you won't be able to ping it.
