I have Virgin Media 10mbit Cable Service, I'm using an old school Motorola SB4200 modem and a Netgear WGR614v6 router.

I'm running Windows 7 and I can't do tracert's, I just get the following output:

C:\Users\Steve>tracert google.co.uk

Tracing route to google.co.uk [209.85.229.104]

Any ideas? BTW my internet works fine, everything is nice and quick and I can max my connection out without issue and I never get packet loss / high ping times.

It's been like this for a while and I finally want to get to the bottom of it!

Cheers :D

probably just a firewall blocking ICMP packets or something :)

Spot on, I just took my router out of the equation and connected straight to my modem using Cat5e and tracert's worked, are there any particular ports I need to open on my router's firewall or any settings I need to change?

hmm not sure. It used something called ICMP I believe, which is different from TCP/UDP which are the kind of ports the routers let you open.

On the router, try going to 'WAN Setup' and tick the "Respond to Ping on Internet Port" box and then see if it works. Not sure if it will, as this is for people pinging you... but it still uses ICMP, so may work!

Thanks man, that worked! Can't believe it was something as simple as that, ha.
