Chaps, im stumped here.

I wanted to replace my router, but untill fttc becomes available in my area im stuck with adsl 2+

That said, i invested in a router from the MM, performed a factory reset on it, and i'm not really getting as far as id like.

I have set an ip for my router, my modem (formally my modem and router) and my switch

dhcp is working, so i can ping my router, my switch and other connected nodes/ but i cannot ping my modem, nor can i seem to get my router to connect to it...

Have included a little diagram too. anyone have any ideas please?

I have followed the guide from the 'quick internet setup' which hasn't given me any joy.

To also mention, the link light from my modem to my router is also lit.
The modem is connected and has a 19Mb connection, from there out of port1 of the modem and into the Wan port of the router.

Am using BT ADSL2+

ok, have now set the modem as 10.0.0.1 on the 255.0.0.0 subnet, while the router is still on the 255.255.255.0 subnet. Switching off the modem and going through the Asus quick internet setup.. results to follow.

still no joy at all :/ can someone please confirm what settings.
I assume i should be running it in wireless router mode? (Default)

the modem does not have a wan port, it was initially a router and modem, i am running it in modem only mode...

the modem is connected to my adsl line via rj11, then from port1 of the modem/router to the Wan port on my asus router.

That's okay then. How is the Asus supposed to be getting its WAN address (static, DHCP, etc.)?

well, intially when i was using the netgear it was connecting via ppoa and getting a dynamic address from BT. there appears to be no such available settings on the assus router, only ppoe - which i believe is a different type of connection.

Maybe I am being a dunce here, i may just be selecting the incorrect option?

The PPPoA issue may stop you doing what you want to do. Vigor's ADSL modem is fairly unique in allowing it to accept a PPPoE connection but actually connect using PPPoA.

Could you live with a double NATed connection?

mhmmm, dont quite like the sound of that. i think the asus may be going back in the box untill infinity arrives (that is PPPOE). Bugger :/

You could configure it as an access point and benefit from its wireless.

Hopefully someone knows better than me and can tell you how to get working as you intended.

Yeah only way to get this working at all is to configure doubled NAT'd - I used to do similiar coz the wireless on the DG834 is dismal whereas its ability to get the best out of an ADSL connection is quite impressive - so I used it as a router, disabled wireless on it and used another router for wireless. (Strangely this used to get me a reproduceable 500-600kbit increase in the downstream sync over having wireless running on the 834).

the wireless for me is bearable. i was wanting it more for the number of sessions it can deal with, so i think ill leave the dg834gt in untill i get infinity installed - to which then i know ppoe will work.

This is a typically messed up situation we have in the UK.

Routers are designed to dial up a PPPoE connection, not a PPPoA one. The only device which does it properly is the Vigor 100 which connects your DSL over PPPoA and presents PPPoE to your router.

I have some custom DG834GT firmware which allows me to run it in modem only mode with a pfSense appliance I built but it is EXCEPTIONALLY complicated and requires ridiculous configuration on the router itself.

It's a butchered version of DGTeam which I have then put my own custom code into also to enable DHCP presentation of the WAN IP to my router interface.

See here for the non DIY part of this script.

There is a pre-made image if you want to mess around with that. If you have a dynamic WAN IP though and not fixed it will make this infinitely more difficult (hence my custom code for DHCP issue of the WAN IP)

You have 2 choices, Double NAT or a Vigor 100 which will 'proxy' PPPoA to PPPoE for you simply.

Should the Asus not be connected to the modem via a lan port, I thought the wan port was reserved for when the router was "dialing out" in modem mode.

I got my DG834GT in modem mode and the Asus RT-N56U is connected to LAN port 4 of the Netgear.

Asus WAN port ==> LAN port 4 DG834GT.
