Unable to use a DG834GT (modem only mode) to work with an RT-N56U

A lot of people using a dg834gt only as a modem also tend to have something ddwrt/tomato behind it - which means making this work is rather easy.

The simplest option is leaving the modem on 192.168.0.1 and the router on 192.168.1.1 and just passing it through (if you have a static ip then just selecting that wan type makes it a since). These days the gui covers it, but it used to require scripting. Point is having a static ip is really the key to this (the fact that Be basically pass ethernet frames doesn't hurt), although someone has kindly put the very complicated alternative above already :) Also exaining why
DrayTek adsl modems are so damn expansive these days..

The problem with your router is it's not broadcom, and as such there is only one custom firmware available - however it's still linux based and more than half the code asus use is taken directly from tomato (qos seem familiar? :)).

Anyway, there have been threads on here going back at least 6 years with this exact same issue. Firstly - when in modem mode the first lan port of the modem should be what's connected tot he wan port of the router. Second - leave the modem on 192.168.0.1. Third depends. Some people have found selecting PPPoE and logging into the isp works for them. Most seems to have success buy selecting DHCP and waiting (sometimes 30 min) for the router to get an ip from the isp. Power on order also seems to count..

SOME ISPs support dialing PPPoE.

My ISP says and thinks they do support it, but they do not - It just point blank does not work :D

Double NATing is the devil. I spent days making custom firmware and when all was finally working the quirkyness of pfSense had me spend a whole other day scripting/configing that differently also.

I say, just buy the DrayTek.
