In acme's chair.
OK so basically, in august i am going to have to send of various bits and pieces of my computer to be RMA'd, and i need a computer to do my work on and maybe a bit of gaming.

I only have one 'decent' (*ahem*) PC other than the one in my sig, which has: CPU, Motherboard, HDD, RAM etc, but no GPU.

So what i am going to have to do is use the GPU and PSU from my gaming rig in this old computer... :p

The temporary specs will be:

Intel Pentium D 3.00GHz
Asus P5VD2-MX SE
2GB DDR2 533MHz
250GB SATA HDD

+

GTX480
700W ModXstream Pro

What kind of performance should i expect from this?

Extreme bottlenecking of the GPU by the rest of the specs is a dead cert, but what will happen if i try and play some 'not too demanding' games like fallout and oblivion etc..?

I have never experienced extreme bottlenecking, so i do not know what this is like.

If you play Fallout/Oblivion you'll be fine. Don't expect to play anything smooth from the last few years.

The processor is literally the minimum spec for oblivion so your not gonna get the best performance, if you can live with low/medium detail you may just get through but expect the worst and hope for the best i would expect choppy gameplay.

Also the Mobo is PCIE 1.0 not 2.0 so even your GPU wont be running at full tilt.

Good luck hope its a fast RMA

You are wrong about the minimum requirements...

Minimum System Requirements
Windows XP 64-bit, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
512 MB System RAM
4.6 GB free hard disk space
128 MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

You'll be able to max out the details I should expect.
