Unbuntu 8.10 - cannot use my DVD drive

hi there,

ive installed unbuntu for the first time today via vmware and all is well except that i cannot use my DVD drive

i have google this issue and and searched on here but cant get a solution...

places > properties says "unknown type" and attmepting to mount the drive via the commans terminal meets with "no media" or something.

any help appreciated - i use an LG drive which is a couple of years old and works fine.

Sounds like a problem with vmware, not the OS or the disk itself. Have you investigated that angle?

i havent so perhaps i should however the same issue can be found for people not using vmware also online though the solutions (i.e. mouting the drive using the command console) they have used are not working for me.

This may not be of help but 8.10 had a lot of bugs, some of which have not been solved.
8.04 is a lot more stable, give that a go, or try Linux Mint 5.

hmm ok linux mint here i come - im using vmware anyway so its not much of a bother at all.
