Downloaded Uncharted demo to see what the fuss about this game, and its upcoming sequel is all about…

Not played it before, so downloaded it from PSN. Visually, its quite good, love the shooting action, but…..

…. Oh my what is with all the screen tearing…?? Its so annoying. And its something I personally hate in video games.

But, PS3 titles do seem to have V-Sync turned off. Its now the new pop up, sprite flicker etc…. I’d rather sacrifice a few FPS for the sake of less tearing IMO.

GT5 prologue does it, NFS Shift is known for it COD4 however is silky smooth. Sadly, we all know COD4 is 600p….

Anyhow uncharted did seem to be quite a cool game, just a shame the tearing irked me.

Uncharted 1 has screen tearing as it uses a double buffer without vsync but...

Uncharted 2 has no screen tearing whatsoever as it uses a triple buffer:

Uncharted 2 is more ambitious. It aims to eliminate GPU idling and to maintain v-sync; effectively Naughty Dog wants to have its cake and eat it. Instead of flipping between two frames, it employs triple-buffering, holding one frame in reserve. Rather than produce a torn frame, it'll display the reserve frame instead.

The result is that we get the visual performance we always wanted from Uncharted... You get those spectacular visuals, and you get them without a single torn frame in the whole game. It's not really a case of being difficult to program as such, though there are memory implications; the trick is in doing so without impacting performance. As you can see from the level FPS graphs on all the Uncharted 2 vids in this feature, Naughty Dog has achieved it. Compare and contrast with Resident Evil 5 on PS3, which uses exactly the same triple-buffer technique but still has performance issues and the additional controller lag up against the double-buffered Xbox 360 version.

Cool... lol teach me for not searching around more. Nice to hear they are trying to address the issue in the next instalment.

Lets hope more developers take note..

The demo is not the full game, the full game still has tearing for some, other people dont notice and its not an issue for them. Anyway dont let the tearing bother you if you can its a great game and is pretty cheap, will also help WHEN you buy uncharted 2 in a few weeks :D
