An old Mk3 3 Cavalier SRi - 2.0 8v would be about £500 for a mint condition example. You'll probably get the 2.0 16v Ecotec for £850 or so.

Handling isn't great, but predictable, so pushable. The 8v has 130bhp, the 16v 136bhp, (not much to pick between them tbh) so they're not slow - 60mph is somewhere about 8 or 9 seconds. Reliable too :)

Insurance will rape you over a barrell though...

personally had 2 and cannot fault them

Over-engineered to the point of been indestructable, prone to rust on wheel arches and sun roof but the engine revs forever.

Mmmmmmmmmm.... Dad used to have a MK2 Cavvy, I love the look of them.

There's a Mk2 Calibre in garish red that lives near Andover, which I see quite frequently. Lovely motor :D

My mate picked one up for £200 a couple of months ago that has the rear valance COMPLETELY rusted through...

Repaired for £50 and now he has an uberfast shopping trolley.

Does such a thing exist? Gotta be good looking and reliable for a first car. Not definatly going to get a car but i might so i want to look at the posibilities. Manual and a nice nippy engine which sounds good. Recommend me something :)

309 SRi... prolly get two of them for £700! Torquey 8v with a close range box = fun.
Perhaps not that great looking though.

As has been said, 309 GTi. Available in 5 door, has the nice spoiler and extra lights to put you above the cheap(er) 309s. Great to drive, I couldn't have found a better car for £300 probably. Then you've got £400 left to help pay the high insurance.

You might want to be a little more sensible with your car choices looking at your age though mate, insurance will be a nightmare.

Yeah, i just realised my insurance would probably be 1k+ or so. What the 309 doesnt look very nice but then again it is just £700..What does everyone think of the 306?

Probably 1k and more for the gti's mate. Try a few quotes and see what they come out with. The 306 - High price for what you get, they do go wrong, lots! More so with high mileage and if they aren't looked after. The interior is dated and your money would be better spent on the uglier same car - the xsara. Oooh I feel like fox ;)
