Hi,

We're considering getting some under stairs storage drawers and a coat cupboard from a company called SmartStorageSolutions. Wondered if anyone else has something similar and if they would recommend them?

I was thinking about trying to create something similar myself but the reality is it will be pants and these guys do this all the time and would hopefully know how to make something that lasts well and keeps looking good.

Posting to follow your story. I have nothing to add other than to say we've thought of doing the same :p

I've always liked making use of space under the stairs, be it storage or in some cases a downstairs toilet, as it seems like wasted space otherwise.

Our old house had a small 'office space' under the stairs which was surprisingly handy as it came off the living room and had the phone connected in there. Could grab paper and do notes easily.

In our current house it's just a small cupboard which is big enough to store things like router, telephone (gigaset n300a which has a separate 'box' to the handsets) and other small junk items you always seem to gain :)

In regards to the doing the design yourself, why not simplify it and make cupboards with shelves. They'd likely store just as much stuff as those drawers which aren't exactly that complicated if I'm honest. The drawers are four sides and a base inside another staggered box shelf running on standard runners from b&q. The hardest bit is making sure you get your angles right for the stairs. I will admit though I'm curious as to how they open them drawers without handles, those runners don't really work well with 'push to open' in my experience, unlike cupboard doors.

Looks like a good use of space - probably more practical than shelves which you have to start routing through to get something at the back.

I'd be going for heavy duty runners and solid wood for the base, just to give a bit of durability, particularly if storing bunches of CD's, DVDs or anything that would be heavy.

Only comment would be if you have young kids in the house, I know if it were mine, they'd want to hide in the drawers so may want to be able to lock them.

I'd love to have something like this as at the moment we just have a couple of large wheeled plastic boxes on which everyone tends to dump their school/PE/work/gym bags and it looks really messy. Unfortunately, our electric meter and fuse board is mounted at the back (in a hideous little cupboard) so it's not really an option without considerable expense. :(

The only thing with the drawers is that you wouldn't go the full depth of the stair....
Have recently designed a kitchen which half is under a stair, works well and for the lower end we just butchered a standard kitchen carcass and used a pan drawer with a bespoke door.
Having a mix of drawers as pictured and a couple of cupboards in the taller area is probably the best amount of useful space that still looks tidy!
