As the title says really.

Is it worth underclocking a C2D for the primary use of a home server/backup/download box?

Just looking for a low powered server with little heat generated (will be shut in a cupboard) and to manage remotely (no screen or keyboard attached).

As an alternative, I have an AMD3000 knocking around. Although that hasn't got a gigabite network card.

What would be the best option?

have you considered the atom dual cores? They sound like they'll fit your need quite well. But to answer your question yes its certainly possible, with some c2d chips you can undervolt them by huge amounts and they'll still run quite happy at stock speeds. Look out for an e6300 in particular, they are very good for undervolting and can be had for around £25-30 on the Members market.

i've already got a C2D system and looking to get a laptop to save a bit of limited space. I think it's a E2180 running at (stock 2.0Ghz) about 2.6Ghz iirc. As well as the AMD3000 currently used as a music system.

So the C2D would be my best bet for my needs and sell on the AMD?
