Underclocking to save power ?

Just bought a new graphics card and noticed i am getting 300 fps in tf2 if i underclocked it would it use less power ?

i have an msi gtx 470

Yeah it will use less power and you could probably lower the GPU voltage.

Well, he didn't say that was the only game he plays, just that was the one game he noticed 300fps in

Anyway, worrying about power usage AFTER purchasing an Nvidia 4xx card is slightly backwards thinking

its not the only game i play and seems to be a lot smother with the new card also i only play at 1680 * 1050 . I got the 470 because is was a great price thanks ocuk and from what i have read they can be clocked to 480 levels so if i decide i need more power in the future its there but as the card does everything i want atm

In that case then I guess underclocking might save you a few pence a year. You'd have to keep remembering to change the clocks all the time though which is more hassle than it's worth imo.

Just use v-sync.

Good Idea, won't load the card any more than your Monitor can handle commonly LOCKED 60fps for 60Hz etc

There is a command to limit the FPS without vsync, fps_max "61"
Google around on how to put that in your config file.

You won't really see much of an energy saving unless you game 24/7, most of a computers time tends to be conducted with idle speeds if its on at all I imagine so next time look for benchmarks with idle power consumption if you are concerned with power draw.
