Undercoat for a dark colour wall?

Wall (plastered) currently painted in dark orange and I want to paint to white (top coat). I've bought GoodHome Brilliant white Matt from B&Q for undercoat: https://www.diy.com/departments/goo...-vinyl-emulsion-paint-5l/3663602567486_BQ.prd

Is this the right one or should I return it?

I read that Leyland Trade Acrylic Primer Undercoat Paint White would be better? But it seems this is for wood.
You can undercoat with plain white, but it’s time consuming. You need to wait for each coat to dry to thoroughly to see if it’s still patchy. I would say though that 2 coats of undercoat and two of top coat should be enough.

You don’t need expensive undercoat paint. It just makes the job a bit quicker and easier.

I'd personally use obliterating paint. Crown make one but you'll need to go to a trade store like Brewers to buy it.

You can use obliterating paint to do all the coats. You'll likely need 3 coats.

3 coats of johnstones covaplus in whatever colour you desire

I've used this a lot in our house and it's great but most recently I wanted something scrubbable so I went for Crown clean extreme scrubbable matt. It looks fantastic any scuffs have just scrubbed off with no bother. It's going to be my go to paint now.

Will just take more coats to cover

some paint brands do state either a light or dark undercoat to get a colour exactly like the pictures

personally I get Johnstones scrubbable matte emulsion colour matched to wife’s demands
It’s just been reduced to ~£45 for 5 litres

I inherited a dark brown "feauture" wall and I used Zinser BIN as an undercoat which worked great. A little pricey but no messing around.

So I should return `GoodHome Brilliant white Matt `back to B&Q and get something else for undercoat?

I already have `Dulux Luxurious Timeless Silk Emulsion paint` from B&Q for top-coat which I will be using.

What you have will do the job. There are better options, like obliterating paints, or something with a hint of colour like a light grey or magnolia which will blot out the dark orange more easily, but the matt white you already have should suffice.
