Hi All,

at some point in hopefully the not so distant future I will be getting a set of 17's for my car.

Now I know sod all about tyres and wanted to know the basic ins and outs of them explained in laments terms for dumb dumbs like me :D

So if anyone can be so helpful and explain what I should be looking for and what the different numbers mean that would be great.

Many Thanks

Telling us what car you've got is a good start :p
I thought everyone knew by now. It's a Saab 9-3.

Without forking out too much, either Toyo Proxes T1-R or Goodyear Eagle F1's are the best bet. Not too hard on the wallet and excellent performers.

Well it will probably be Michelins as it won't be me taking it to get tyres, will be Dad because I'll be working and he can run it down the road where they do them at cheaper prices as they know him.

Just wondered about the numbers etc.

Thanks for the help though!

I was reading a mag the other day, they suggested Eagle F1's, Toyo Proxes and some other type.. Personally go for the Eagle F1's. The Toyo Proxes are THE worst tyre ive used on a car. Although i personally use Yokohoma for my XR2 but on my GSI Turbo i used Avon ZZR3's, these were an excellent tyre with mega ammounts of grip in the dry, just in the wet it let it down a bit. I got good life out of them as well. :)

Tyres are generally described in the form of aaa/bb Rcc d

aaa = tyre width in mm
bb = tyre profile (sidewall) in % of tyre width
cc = diameter of hole where the wheel goes
d = speed rating

So 195/55 R15 H = 195mm wide, 55% (0.55*195, 107.25mm) profile, 15" wheel, H speed rating (130mph) :)

I believe the tyres for your car are 195/60 R15. If they have to be Michelin, the best tyre would be the Pilot Primacy.

Did you remember to put air in them? I had Proxes on the back on my MR2 and now on the front of my Civic, and I can offer nothing but praise for both wet and dry grip. The only downside is the rate at which they wear, but that's to be expected from the soft compound.

ive got a full set of toyos on mine atm... i had F1's before that

and i would defently go back to the F1's with out a 2nd thought... much better

Im sorry but in my personal opinion they were no where near as good as the Avon ZZR3's i had put on instead. And rate of wear? How about 3000 miles and two track days.

p6000's are terrible- used to make my traction control go nuts in the wet.... Toyo Proxes (I use them because they were free with my alloys) or even better- GY Eagle F1's are your best bet.
