Undervolting E4400

Try it... unlike overclocking, undervoting/underclocking won't damage the chip at all, so drop it as low as you can and work up until it works :)
 
If it's any help - I run my i5 750 at 1.1v @stock speed - well CPU-Z is reporting this, I'm set even lower in BIOS but can't remember what is it without rebooting. Been running under volt almost 2 years, no problems.

Much depends quality of PSU. When I changed from OCZ Stealth 600w to Seasonic X-650 I could use lower voltages still. There was a brick wall with the OCZ and PC would crash, then with the X-650 I dropped 4 more increments on the CPU Voltage still stable.

Running lower voltage you do notice in CPU temp, keep going down in tiny steps until something crashes - then go back up a couple of steps and you should be stable.
