Undervolting questions - new laptop

Hello! I'll soon be getting a new laptop with fairly decent graphics, so I'm hoping to do a small bit of gaming on it :P. I have some questions, though.

I realise that laptops run a lot hotter than desktops (duh :P), especially when gaming, so I thought it'd be a good idea to undervolt both the CPU and GPU. How can I do this? It's a AMD Turion X2 RM-74 processor, and ATI 4570 graphics. Also, are there any risks in doing so?

Also, would anyone know the maximum safe temperatures for this CPU/GPU?

Thanks for any help :D

so you want to decrease its speed and heat? im sure the manufactorer has already tested such elements and set accordingly?

Nah you can undervolt a CPU or GPU and still retain the same speed, just produce less heat and use less electricity doing so. The manufacturer will set a given voltage they know even the least efficient chips will run at. So you can find certain chips will hit the same speed with less voltage. Same theory behind certain chips being better overclockers than others just the otherway round.

You can undervolt to an even slower speed with even less electricity if you really want to. Usefull in a laptop if you want the least amount of heat and extended battery life, but it's often a lot of hassle for not a lot of gain. The risk is the same as overclocking a cpu/gpu without enough volts, it won't be stable. You may get slight corruptions, BSOD's, or it might not even POST. I wouldn't recommend trying unless you know what you're doing, and have a crash recoverable bios.

There is a good chance however, your laptop BIOS won't let you do any of it, so it's a moot point.

Yes, I'm hoping I can lower the voltage a bit, but leave the speed unchanged. Then I (hopefully) won't have to worry about overheating as much.

That's true about the laptop BIOS, there probably won't be an option in there, but I have heard of software that allows you to do so!

Also true :P I was kinda hoping the kind Overclockers fellows would help me! If it is too much trouble, and too risky, though, then I don't think I will.

EDIT: Surely if I do all the undervolting via software, I can just format if anything goes horribly wrong?

you would think manufacturers would, yet i had a defective nvidia card in my laptop which im sure died because of heat in the end :/

Alrighty, I did some google searching and found out about a program called 'k10stat'. It's used to change the voltages on processors, and because it's done via software it's applied when you run the program, so no danger of ruining the laptop. I've also heard of 'RMclock' which I assume is the same.

Does this sound safe? Also, still not sure about how to undervolt the GPU :S anyone have any ideas?
