Hi all,

Looking for a cheapish underwater camera and thought surely someone here know of a half tidy camera or had 1st hand experience of one.

Looked at the waterproof bags but don't really fancy dragging the bulk of my canon around underwater and risking a leaky bag or catching it on something that makes it leak!

TIA

Steve

Is it just for snorkelling?

If so the cheap but reasonable option is one of the fuji models from their refurb store, not earth shattering but decent and solid. If you have more money the olympus tg2 (probably tg3 or 4) is basically a high end compact that just happens to be water proof!

I think most manufacturers have a waterproof compact so I guess you could take your pick! I bought a Lumix DMC-FT3 a few years ago and that's good for 10 meters or 12 or something and there's been a few new ones since (up to DMC FT4 or 5 now).

Thanks guys,

Hopefully will get used for a bit of scuba, coral reef and fish etc probably not especially deep.

Worst case I can probably hire something.

Got a tg3 for a recent trip after a repair company lost my fuji. Im glad they did cos its the best underwater point and shoot i have ever used, and ive had a few!

Not sure what you are classing as cheap ??

you could pick up an F30 and underwater housing for less than £150 now these as a bundle would have been around £350 a few years back.

I have one that I use for diving as its good for 40 meters but we have also used it on every holiday in the pool and the sea.

If you are looking for a really cheap solution have a look at the SJ4000, it's the Chinese answer to the go pro, quality not 100% on par but it's a third of the price and comes with a 30 meter enclosure and lots of different mounts. I have one (the Qumox rebranded one) and it's a great little action cam and cheap as chips.

Unless you're sticking especially shallow nothing mentioned so far will suffice for scuba :)

On topic - sister and Dad both have Olympus tough cameras which come on holiday with us in the pool, they work well and produce great photos for a compact.

Some good food for thought here, and something to look at whilst at work :o

Leaning towards the TG2 etc with the F2.0 lens so far, the SJ4000 nice clone job, whilst it has its merits for video i'm not sure thats an option for this job but might nab one for bike use and recording moron motorists!

Looked at hire shops too, Canon G10/G16/D20 seem to be popular and around £25 a day includes 4gb sd card to keep, dont think thats too bad considering some touristy places would rob you blind!

Thanks for your suggestions :)
