i bought myself a D3LL laptop about 2 months ago, but I'm really not happy with it. It's very large, chunky, heavy, runs very hot.. On top it has in fact overheated TWICE when i ran it for over 5 hours.

I need to know of a way to get out - either refund or exchange for a different model.

Can anyone help me?

Good luck getting replacement off Dell -be prepared for a long difficult stressful process to get money back. :) . You've had it for some time, it's not faulty, it's just getting hot.

It's very large, chunky, heavy,

That is your own fault for not checking sizing and weight of the laptop

Make enough fuss about it being a design flaw and I reckon you'll get something.

lol we couldn't get replacement for 5 DOA Dell laptops within 24 hours of delievery. What makes you think OP will get better service? Although it's possible of course.

Dell customer service "You've bought our products, now *** off!" :D

If it has overheated, it is faulty since the cooling system should be designed to keep it cool enough.

...and they will probably want to send an identical model as replacement.

It's an Inspiron 9400 17" model, latest spec. It's a nice machine, i know i choose it but actually seeing it on your desk and using it is different from viewing it on their site... It's very fast and all, but besides my personal disappointment I've had the following 2 issues in fact:

1. System shutdown due to overheating. 2x (after 5 hours + of use)
2. Harddrive making strange "screetching" noises on a few occasions. Not sure whether this is normal or not.

Maybe my best option is to sell it, while it's still high spec, and buy another model? Or maybe keep it?

I've put a small block at the back, so the back of the laptop is tilted a bit off the desk surface, so I think this will give better cooling as it has more space to the back. Maybe this will sort the overheating prob. out, although this should not happen should it?

What if they send a new identical model and I experience the same problem?

Try and kick up a fuss and see if you can get a refund. Otherwise, when they do send a replacement no doubt, it will be the same as the one you bought off them :)

Quoted for lollage factor. :p

Sell it on to someone else who believes a lappy will replace a decent system then buy decent components from Oc and build yourself a Proper system.
If you have to have a notebook then get a Decent one which means Totally avoiding Dell. :D

OcUk sells them though.... I'm not trying to replace my desktop at all!! I think buying online without actually seeing/testing it is the problem...

In fact the model I have is quite a "hot" item on the bay at the moment....

here's an idea, kick up a fuss, if all they do is send you an idenctical replacement... sell it, you'd probebly get a better price for an unused one :p

It's your own fault really and you should have done your research. My advise would be to sell it on the bay add some cash to it and buy yourself a MacBook, I defy anyone not to be happy owning a MacBook. You can install Windows XP on it as well. ;)
