Uni Accommodation...

I'm hoping to start at the University of York this October and am stuck as to where to go for accommodation.

The on campus rooms are horribly small, some of the smallest I've seen, and really quite... basic. I didn't expect much, but from the rooms I've seen, I expected more.

Basically, I've been given the choice of getting a flat about 10 minutes away with my girlfriend or getting a place in halls. Is the social life really going to be that different off campus?? Having looked at it, getting the flat is about £600 a year cheaper than halls, but what would you guys do?

I don't want to exclude myself from the buzz that is Uni social life, but then again I'd much rather just have a flat for me and my girlfriend than share a kitchen, common room and bathroom with 10 or 12 other students. I'm just looking for a few opinions if you were in my position.

Thanks :D

Well, of course I want to move in with my girlfriend... and it is considerably cheaper...

But everyone who I've spoken to that's gone to uni has said that the social life is something you need to experience. I think I'm leaning towards the flat because it's closer to the city center than the uni and still reasonably close to the uni itself and with the £600 extra a year I could actually afford to go out every other night.

I just don't know if I'd be making the wrong choice. Is living in halls really that special?

Well, having come back to the PC, seen all of the comments above and read through them all it seems the general consensus at OcUK is go and find a place in Halls.

All of the points that people have made are fair, but I guess I'll have to wait an see what happens. And for all those who asked, the flat is £600 cheaper inclusive of bills....

My opinion has changed since the start, I think I'm probably leaning closer to Halls now! Sigh, maybe my mind will change when I find out how little Student Finance are going to give to me.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
