Hey all,

Am sitting here with a quarter-done dissertation, and the hand-in time is 4pm this Friday.

Just wondering if anyone else on OcUK has been so flippant with their dissertation... :D

People always try and act 'cool' by leaving it late, and brag about how late they left it, seems a bit silly to me tbh :p

That is leaving it pretty late. I scrapped my first dissertation a month before it was due in (it was rubbish). The second one I finished in around three weeks, having to work flat out to get it done . A couple of days just doesn't seem like even near enough time.

Thank God that I opted out of doing a dissertation and chose a normal module myself, otherwise I would be in a similar situation. :D

I know it's pretty late but to be honest I don't really care much.. we're doing several other units as well, all with equal point scores. I've been pretty much insanely depressed over the holidays (when I was meant to get it done) and realised I want to stop doing the degree now and go into something that doesn't make me feel like there's no light at the tunnel.

I'm going into IT as soon as I leave - gonna start with an apprenticeship with BT to gain some experience in Networks, then do a CCNA/CCNP/MCSE. Maybe a degree afterwards, and a part time A-level in ICT.

apply for an extension? is that possible in your uni?

Mine was meant to be in for last Thursday, and I got an extension until Tuesday (yesterday). Unfortunately I am still working on it, and I have 8 hours to write about 4000 words and put this stupid essay to bed! :( :o

Not just me, then?

I'm not gonna bother asking for an extension though..

a lot of final year students are depressed this time of year. There's no point throwing away the possibility of a degree with only a few weeks left to go though. Ask for an extension and get it done - Don't waste three years dude!

I would have been embarassed to ask for an extension unless I was ill, physically couldn't do the work or had some kind of family problems. You have known about it for long enough, why do you need an extension?

At my uni all the stupid people were getting extensions for "loosing their USB stick" or "haven't had time". Bit of a cheek really, extensions should only be for extreme circumstances.

I thought I left my dissertation late starting in the easter holidays :o

I was pretty blase about mine but that really isn't a good thing since I've now got the wait to see how poorly I've done. Most of it was done in the final two weeks before hand in but I did have it finished two days before hand in so I could go out. It depends how long it is meant to be but 2,000 and odd words per day is not unachievable, maybe more if you really get into the topic.

Good luck to anyone who still has theirs to do. :)

Simple solution (as used by a lot of my friends and totally frowned upon by me!) Go to the doctors complain of stress lack of sleep feelings of impending doom, he'll write you a nice note as he won't be prepared to risk you topping yourself and then off you trot to your tutor who will hand out a week or two's extension.

Made me sick when I was working my but off to finish my work on time but worked well for a lot of people I know!

not going to do very well are you.

us university students can leave things to the last night and still manage a 2-1 or a high 2-2...i started revising a 4-5 days before my mid term exams and still managed to get get 60% give or take 5% on most of em...dont underestimate the power of coffee and sleepless nights..it also kinda depends on how productive you are when you actually do start doing some work...if you write a paragraph or manage to read only 10 pages for revision in an hour then obviously this wont work for you..

I'm guessing your pre-dissertation weeks were spent revising and investigating subject material? Mainly Booze and *****?

People do this? Shouldn't be awarded a degree in that case, I didn't even find mine particularly difficult but thats probably as I didn't have many exams.

im doing an economics degree and luckily for me i only have to worry about exams..whereas my friend whos doing business has to writen 2 4000 words on top of the 6 exams that she has to sit through so im sure you can see as to why people do that kinda stuff...yes its unfair on the other students that worked their ass off handed it on time bla bla bla but thats life for you..whatever it takes to pass..

So you've spent 3 years and thousands of pounds getting to this moment, and you can't be bothered? :/

It took me a good 6months of solid work, with the last few weeks regulary consisting of 16 hour days to get my dissertation done.

@ArmyofHarmony, don't worry too much about the VIVA. As long as your actual dissertation is half decent you should sail through it. I was actually quite dissapointed with mine as I was more prepared than the lecturers. They were running behind schedule and I had to compress my presentation down to 15minutes. It might sounds a lot, but when you've dedicated 6 months of your life to something that your proud of, its hard to rush through it.

its not the fact that we cant be bothered its the fact that theres just so much to do...that one month easter break we get may seem like a lot but most students go home to see their families so theres a week gone so its down to 3 weeks to revise for 8 exams (10 lectures each - 80lectures - 80 chapters pretty much) or write a couple essays and revise for exams..yes we couldve been model students revising during the term after every lecture rushing home to read up on the stuff we did that day but theres only a handful of students that are actually like that and i feel sorry for em because i just cant see em enjoying the best years of their lives..sure he'll probably get a better job then me but im not aiming to be a multi millionaire as long as im happy with the job i end up with and live a comfortable life...after uni we're all gonna be gettin 9-5 jobs we're going to be getting too old for house parties and clubs and whatnot..as long as you dont completely mess up your education id rather enjoy these years than be a model student..
