Am I right in thinking that when writing you uni essays you don't use the would "I" in it. eg my friends essay starts

I have been provided with a DNA sequence. The aim of this assignment is to use both web based and GCG based programmes to identify predicted signals and secondary structures on the protein that may be essential biological and structural function of the given protein. Many of these programmes and web pages have their advantages and their limitations and I will be discussing these factors throughout the assignment.

I'd never refer to myself in my Uni essays. IMO it breaks the flow of the argument and sounds quite unsophisticated.

In all the politics and history essays I've written so far have been written in the third person. So avoid using "I" if you can.

Never use I in an essay. It's just not cricket :p

BTW ... not sure if you wrote that out yourself or C&Ped it, but 'programme' refers to something on television or something you get in a theatre. 'Program' is the computer kind. If it's C&Ped then you should let the guy know.
