Well.. yeah/

im going to northumbria uni in september.. and was hoping to join a team to play football... i notice they have like leagues for 5 a side, 7 a side, and 11 a side... on the student union website thing...

it says if i pay £10 on the 10th september i can join up...

is anybody else involved in something like this? is it like hardcore footballers only, or can it be a bit more relaxed? as in do i have to be semi-pro to even get considered?

any info help will be great.

Edit: D'oh. I thought you meant the actual Uni teams. I don't think the level would be that good. It would probably be like playing with your mates. Some people would be very good and some would be very poor. When I played 5-a-side it was more like a friendly kickabout than a hardcore leg snapping type of game. I don't know what the 11-a-side games would be like but I can't imagine they would be much different. Maybe a little more competitive.

i've got mates who've played at imperial and they have something like 7 teams, and from what i've heard the 6ths and 7ths are more social teams that don't take it too seriously

i think if your willing to turn up for games you'll probably get them, especially saturday mornings when most students have hangovers.

I play for my university team currently, well just finished, at Essex university, there are 6 teams here and at a lot of universities there are about this many.

The skill level varies greatly, and there are a lot who come to training because they enjoy the game but some who take it quite seriously.

Our uni 2nds got to the final of the busa cup (British University Sport Association) but unfortunately lost.

I would say the 1st and 2nd team at my uni are at an ok level but nowhere near county level which i am used to playing with a lot of my mates back home playing for hampshire at schoolboy. but some universities like hertfordshire etc have very high quality teams with some ex england schoolboys etc. just go to the trials and see where you fit in, if anything you will make some new friends early on.

1st teams (best team) 2nd team (next best team) etc etc 7th team (very poor but a good laugh I'd guess! :p)

At Lancaster it's split up into colleges and each college has a 1st 2nd 3rd etc. Then they have a Uni team aswell which is the big boys :p

arent there mini leagues.

i checked northumbria site and they have a league for different days.. wed/satday/sunday

for different type of teams.. 5side 7side 11side.

each side and day has its own league.

apparently.. as far as i can tell. do you have to pay a sign up fee too? and is there anything to actually try to win... like a prize of some sort?

well i guess it is different, here it is 1st - 6ths best to worst, who play busa games every wednesday and are in our local saturday leagues, well 1st - 5ths. then there is the internal tournaments where you get together with mates and play against other footballers at the uni. we just have one football team under the university and then the players join this and sign up to the fa so they can play saturdays.

IS this a seperate league within the uni to play in?? If so the standard will be similar to 2ndary school playing with your mates (ie varying from poor to quite good). There isnt anyhting like this at my uni, but we have setup and run knock competitions (5 + 11 a side) for charity and fun.

The whole 1st,2nd..etc refers to the teams that represent the university and go to play other insitutions in various regional university leagues. Even with these the standard varies considerably. The lower teams are very social, but the top teams can be good and have several semi-pro players (think we have 2/3 ryman 1 players or something in our medical 1st team).

There can be prizes and things. At our uni there will be several 5-side comps over the year that you can play in.

I was in the Kingston 5th and it was all about the drinking :p the first team were constantly going for fitness training and practice 3 times a week, far too serious imo, we had cheese music nightclub on monday, regular dance club on wednesday then union drinks on friday...superb :D

Some unis also have departmental teams. ie geology, law etc. You dont have to be doing that subject to play for them so lots of stealing of players goes on etc. The standard isnt that high but its sociable Wed afternoon stuff.
