I have a friend in Halls.

He has one ethernet socket in his dorm and one IP address that is authorised to use the network.

He has a laptop and Xbox and wants to use both at the same time, would he be able to buy a router and set it's IP to the authorised one, then use both devices 'behind' the router under NAT?

Thanks

Technically, yes. This is exactly what I do in uni halls. I register my router (WRT54GL) on the network and then my computer, laptop and phone all sit behind it under NAT, either wired or wireless.

He should probably check with the uni that this is acceptable, however.

I'm with Unite in Sheffield and just plugged my router (WRT54GL) in to the wall, got my xbox and mac wired, my phone and laptop wireless. Works fine for me, just make sure the wireless is secured (mine is hidden and secured so you can't even see it unless you know it's there).

There's 2 or 3 in my halls without passwords on their routers, people are just going straight onto them. They must be crazy, or not realise what is happening.
