Moving on campus in September and confused about internet connection.
"Students can connect to the Internet using the cabled access (in the rooms) to the Goldsmiths network"
What does this mean? I assume Ethernet connection, am i right?

You are staying in a University, do you think that the average IT person working at a University will be dumb to the idea of using VPNs? They can (and probably will) look at the level of traffic you are using.

Any self-respecting connection will probably rate-throttle VPN connections anyway.

When i was at university halls 3 years ago they supposedly monitored your Internet usage and what you've been doing but people were still torrenting and doing whatever they wanted, nothing was ever said. I very much doubt they actually monitor you that closely.

I say 100% there will be an Ethernet port.

Keep your torrents for home though - If caught (50/50 chance) they will kick you off the internet in your room. They will let you back on after a poor apology though!
Pornography will probably be OK via streaming sites ;).

Look out for a campus file sharing network, they are available at lots of university campuses and allow you to share stuff at blindingly fast speeds.

At my uni, security were aware of it, but in their words "there were bigger fish to fry"

They didn't give a damn about file sharing really, they only blocked torrents because the UTP traffic was indistinguishable from DDOS activity.
