Hi.

I've just got the internet up and I was surprised at how slow it is, I was downloading something last night at 1100kb/sec, about 8mbit? is Uni internet not supposed to be like 100mbit? I'm not in Uni but its private halls on some weird internet called hornet 2009 provided by Manchester uni for the uni accommodation and some private halls.

Also do they block everything? Usenet wont even connect here :(

I expect they will block most things otherwise it will just become so bogged down with peer 2 peer apps.

It could be 100mbit per building or floor or anything...

Nah not in most places, probably more like 20mbit+

Depends on the techs they have, most block P2P stuff and LAN gaming unless you ask for ports to be unblocked.

It varies from uni to uni, up until 2004 the University of Salford had dial up in all halls - at 2p/min or £15 month.

They then installed a JaNet derived network giving each user around 1megabit with the cost included in the rent - which was a huge improvement. In the last year or so they have bumped this to a 100megabit connection some things work some things don't - given how much your paying for it (probably nothing) i think that's only fair if they don't allow you to completely destroy the bandwidth available - each site is probably only on a gigabit or so fibre - with the main university connection being 10Gigabit (SuperJaNet)

1100k/sec is about what I'd expect from a 10mbit connection allowing for overheads etc. Although the uni janet connection will be much faster, it's entirely possible it's only running 10mbit to the workstation. That's what it was like at Soton 10 years ago anyway.

Manchester is one of the better universites when it comes to speed in halls. I remember at warwick having gigabit in halls and that was about 5 years ago...internet speeds was still pretty dire and caused lots of complaints.

We had to pay £128 all in one go and thats for the year.

That's not so bad, when I was in private halls for my first year at uni I remember paying something like £300 for 48 weeks of 2mbit up and down. Was totally unfiltered though.

Also consider how much a reasonable ISP on a BT line would cost you over the course of a year, you'd be looking at at least £450-500 for the first year.

Thats what I like about Hertfordshire we are right on the JaNet and EastNet main junctions so we get some ridiculous speeds if you go on at the right time.

At the halls in my uni the internet was so slow a lot of people just didn't bother with it. You could only use wired connection at 10mbps. Our halls apparently used a 20mb fibre-optic link which served 300+ people. Meaning that generally you only got 50kbps or so max, even slower in the evening, although if you were prepared to be up at 5am you could get a few megabits...

Oh and the limit was 2gb a month or they would cut you off. Also they'd cut you off if you downloaded anything much over 200mb. Everything was filtered too.... Thankfully I'm in private accomodation now = fast internet!

Oh no, you're downloading at 1100KB/s!

Remember, download speeds depends on the connection of the server you're downloading from as well.

1100kb/s is insane!

I'm in private accom who rent a leased line which has a 5gb cap and a max sped of 110kb/s per user

As for not being able to get faster it is likely to be capped somewhere as if everyone downloaded at 1100kb/s bandwidth would quickly become saturated.

Sounds about right. The new connection started round about November/December am I right? Was quite nice to see higher download speeds. :)

But his porn won't download quick enough at 1.1MB/s!

That's a whole 11 minutes for a film damnit! Too slow!

The internet isn't needed for porn at uni....just look out the window - the amount of times i've seen 18yr old girls streaking across the field...i've lost count

RE: MarcLister

I believe so, i've been away from uni for a year and now i'm in a private house so i've never used it myself, although i was able to use the 100meg unrestricted line in the Shock studio from my first year (until i finished my tenure as station manager)

I just graduated from Salford this summer.

If you were in the Shock Studio you must know DRZ? I might even have met you. :p

just got to uni. speeds are only about 2Mb/s (226KB/s) :(

<edit> i'm at coventry>
