I am currently studying Economics & Finance degree at a reputable college in London. I have picked my third year modules, but can see one being very hard (advanced microeconomics) and was wondering if employers, especially in finance care about what modules you have done, or just the classification. I would much rather do something like environmental economics than adv. micro and get an easy First, but don't know how to find out if it makes a difference.

Any help from anyone that works in the city or knows how it works, cheers

I dont work in the city in particular but my experience with job requirements in regards to modules seemed to go only as far as whether they are skewed towards maths or not. Apart from that, there was never a discussion on the exact nature of each particular module so Im guessing it would be safe to assume that if you could take an alternative that is quite technical, you would be safe.

In general it doesn't matter too much; assuming you want to enter banking and the like. it is worth having some maths courses and accounting, economics - but i assume you have done bits and pieces given the degree title. i would do what you want unless the course it specific to the area you want to work in... e.g worth doing advanced econ/metrics if you want to work in higher level quant/economist roles.

employers care to a point but classification is ultimately the name of the game... you should have enough suitable modules already... it's not as if you have done anthropology, sociology, english, media modules... (and even if you had that would still be manageable)...

it's all about the uni and getting the 2.1 plus extra acitivities.

harsh reality is oxbridge, imperial, ucl and lse - then warwick, bath, and a few choice others is the best path to front office roles.
