Uni network question

Hi all,

I have my desktop and laptop at uni. My desktop is connected to the uni network via ethernet (through an unmanaged HP switch in my room) which works fine.

My laptop also connects to the uni network (either over the wireless or through the switch, when I connect it.)

Now I have a netgear router up here and what I was hoping to set up is my own wireless network which would enable me to stream movies from my desktop to my laptop, while still having my desktop connected to the uni network. (ie I would choose to connect my laptop to my wireless network and be able to see folders on my pc and stream over it.)

Is it possible to do this while also being connected to the uni network. I have 2 ethernet ports on my pc so that would not be an issue.

Something like:

Uni Network --> desktop --> Router > *Wireless* > Laptop/phone/tablet

if so how would I go about setting this up?

I have a USB wifi card for my desktop, but not sure how that helps? I don't want to connect to the uni network over Wifi as there are 20 people using the same access point and it tends to slow down quite a lot
