Hi guys
I live in the Wolverhampton area and I have a home network set up with Unifi devices , I brought a Unifi USG about two weeks ago and for the life of me I can’t seem to get it adopted into my control, I currently have a netgear nighthawk doing my routing and modem work but would love to get the usg set up ,, is there someone out there who can do a site visit to my property and help ?? Thanks guys

Possibly. But before you start doing stuff like that can I suggest you do a full factory reset of everything and watch the Crosstalk Solutions YouTube video on setting up a UniFi network from scratch? It’s actually quite easy if you do it in the right order.

Hi mate
Thanks for the reply,
Funny you should mention crosstalk solutions, Iv been a subscriber to that guy for years and Iv watched nearly all his videos, he’s a great guy ,, Iv reset the usg and the draytek 130 modem , I’m going to give it another go tomorrow, I’m still hoping there’s an engineer out there who can pop round and help ,, I would love to complete my Unifi setup with the usg , cheers mate

I am a fully certified Ubiquiti Network Engineer but to get me to drive to Wolverhampton from Norfolk won’t be cheap! Especially as I’m pretty sure we can talk it through on here.

First of all, what equipment do have?

hi mate
thanks so much for the reply .
norfolk is a long way ,,
my set up is
netgear nighthawk D7000 - routing and modem
unifi switch 8 POE 150w - main switch
UniFi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus
4 x usw flex mini switches - office , sons room , daughters room , shed
1 x switch 8 living room
2 x dome cameras
1 x UVC-G3-AF Camera
1 x micro unifi camera

i WANT TO REPLACE THE NIGHTHAWK WITH THE Draytek Vigor 130 to do the modem side and the usg to sort the routing and fire wall ,,,
on my first attempt i logged into the usg GUI and it showed the image below ( gateway unable to connect to the internet)
MY INTERNET PROVDER IS TALK TALK which i receive down our phone line

i tried to configure it myself with the setting shown in pic A BELOW

i hope this might clear it up abit ?

Right. So your challenge is get your head around subnetting. It's not hard really, but it's vital for this.

At the moment your Netgear device is handing out the IP addresses based on it's default configuration of 192.168.0.x with the Netgear device itself acting as the DHCP server at 192.168.0.1

Your entire network is on the 192.168.0 subnet. As far as your network is concerned they can only see devices on the 192.168.0.x IP range. So they don't know anything about your USG on the 192.168.1.x subnet.

And vice versa your USG can only see the 192.168.1.x subnet so it know nothing about your other devices, including VITALLY, the UCK Gen2. It needs the UCK Gen2 to tell it anything about itself.

So your two devices are just not talking to each other and the UCK Gen2 cannot ever adopt your USG because it's on the wrong subnet.

Hopefully you are following me.

So, the good news is this is easy to fix. The bad news is that your network is going to be offline for quite some time while you get it all configured. So you need to find a quiet time when no-one is using your system to get the final configuration done.

The initial configuration can be done using the Netgear as the WAN input and double-NATting the connection for a bit. You need to go to any devices that have fixed IP addresses on the 192.168.0.x subnet and make them all have fixzed IP addresses on the 192.168.1.x subnet instead.

If you still want to do this, then it's going to be slightly painful.

Unplug the uplink from your Netgear router and plug it into LAN1 on the USG. Plug any LAN connection from the Netgear into the WAN1 port on the USG.

Go into the USG and set the WAN to DHCP and the USG will light up with an internet connection and it will hand out LAN addresses on the 192.168.1.x subnet to everything. Including, hopefully, the UCK Gen2.

At this point the USG is doing the routing on your LAN and you can adopt the USG to your controller on the UCK Gen2.

You can then unplug the Netgear router from WAN1 and plug in the Vigor 130. Don't do any configuration on the Vigor 130, it doesn't need it unless you're on Sky.

Now go to the Network tab in the controller, select WAN and enter PPPoE as the WAN authentication method (instead of DHCP) and enter your PPPoE username and password. Save it, let it update the USG and wait for it to come online. It will come online eventually, you just need to leave it be. Go and make a cup of tea and come back and see if it's working. It probably will be.

I think that should be all you need to get started. It's MUCH easier if the USG, UCK, Controller, switches and access points are all factory defaulted because they're designed to work out of the box together in a certain order, and that's the way that Crosstalk Solutions shows you in their setup video. There is a really good chance that your network will be down for a couple of hours while you organise all this, so pick your moment!

hi mate
cheers for taking the time out for such a detailed description , iv read it three times so far , im not the best at networking but think iv got about 80 percent of it lol.
so the best way to configure the usg is to keep the 192.168.1 subnet and have all my devices on that subnet ?
iv been reading up about changing the usg subnet (192.168.1) to my existing subnet (192.168.0 ) ??

i wished you lived closer to me,,
do you now of any other Ubiquiti Network Engineers closer to my location by any chance ?

No, don’t try the whole subnet shift until you’ve got it running on the 192.168.1.x subnet first.

Hi mate
Just in interest , how much would you charge to come and sort it out ? Thank you

I’m not allowed to tout for business on the forums. Send me a trust message and I’m sure I can hook you up with someone in the West Midlands.
