I am having a problem with my optical drive.

In Device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, can i uninstall...

intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI controller.

If i do will windows re-install it after a reboot? Also will there be any effects from doing this or is it quite safe?

As my optical drive isn't being detected i have no other way to reinstall the drivers only using windows.

Depends if your hard-drive is also using this - is your optical drive being detected in the BIOS? If it's your hard-drives controller then it may cause your OS to fail.

Yes the optical drive is connected in bios and also spins up within windows when a disc in put in, but doesn't show in my computer.

Is there a way i can detedt if the hard drive is using this? I am using a laptop if that makes any difference.

Does the Optical show up in device manager? If so you may need to just give it a drive letter in disk management.

If it's not in dev manager try opening an elevated CMD prompt and doing...

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
devmgmt.msc

When dev manager opens do View, Show hidden devices and then see if the optical drive appears then but as a faded object. If so right click and uninstall, then either reboot or rescan for changes. See if that kicks it back into life.

You don't say which version of Windows you are using. Missing CD-ROM drives in Explorer were very common on XP because of the way some software installed hooks to the cd drive. Image burning software, movie players and so on.

It's possible you can experience the same issue on Vista and 7 I guess.

Did your CD drive ever show up? If it did, at any point, then you probably have a registry issue. Some googling will reveal a fix if that's the case.

Yes the drive does show in device manager.
I have tried assigning a drive letter and it all looks like it is going ok but still not showing.

@yashiro

Sorry using win 7.
Yes it used to be there just noticed one day that it was no longer visible. I think you could be right about the registry thing but don't really no what to look for. I did find something refferring to th upper filters but they are not present.

Just one thought - have you actually inserted anything?

Windows 7 won't actually show this 'properly' unless it has media in it.

Yes i have. Also having same problem with internal card readerand when an external card reader is plugged into usb.

@m4cc45

Have tried a few fixes but will try those you posted thanks.

Just tried those 2 links and still no luck. I tried in safe mode and it let me assign a drive letter but when i restarted and booted normally it wasn't there again. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

This sounds like the typical upper/lowerfilters registry problem, just check that your drive can boot off the Windows DVD then you can rule out hardware completely. In the above links the second one contains some manual steps where you delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values from the registry, that has always fixed it for me in the past.

You may have tried the FixIt thing, but have you tried the manual instructions?

Ive seen this caused by iTunes, do you have that installed? If so there is a registry fix for it on apples website. Something to do with the upper and lower filters registry keys.

Have already checked that thanks. They do not show in the registry like a lot of other people have mentioned on various different forums.

Don't have Itunes installed and never has been.

Anything else.

It does show in safe mode but only after assigning a drive letter. When in normal mode is assigns but dissappears instantly.
