I just came across unitrends and think they have just released a new line of products, well since i last looked. They now have a free vm backup solution up to 1tb of data. Great for small business.

Has anyone tried their hardware appliance and replication partner?

They have a full demo on youtube about the appliance solution. Do you know of any other companies that do similar?

The VMware stuff appeared out of PHD Virtual which was sort of a poor-man's Veeam.

Im interested in the new product, looks very polished but I've not had time to look into it properly. It doesn't need a Windows VM to run on which is a plus. Not sure it does the same sort of recovery verification that Veeam is capable of, though.

I do wonder how much unitrends costs, i told my new company about it and they have yet to call them up and ask for a quote. They got a quote from commvault came back at like £500k or something. But i think they were requesting initially over speced a bit.

They are quite cheap, you can pay per agent or per vm host socket like Veeam. The downside is they are quite small in the Uk, when we chatted they had only just opened a small office here. If it was my money I'd maybe try them out, but management like looking at the Gartner reports and would rather pay more for market leaders.

Saying that, lots of people are leaving commvault as its too big, complex and expensive.
