Universal Remote Controls?

I'd quite like to get a universal remote control to work my TV, DVD player and freeview box so I don't have to swap between remotes all the time, and also to save the original remotes from wearing out.

I just wondered if anyone has much experience of these and could recommend a good one to me which will do all the above?

Thanks for replies :)

I just picked up a Harmony 525, was dead easy to setup and pretty much does what it says on the box. Has "activities" that you setup, for example "Watch TV". Selecting this would turn on the TV and freeview box (and amp if you have one, whilst turning off the other components) also setting the TV (and amp) to the required inputs. Also the power off button turns everything off in one fell swoop. Cost about 50 notes though...

I looked at the harmony - the 885. Before taking the step to spend a load of money on
a high end remote i went for a cheaper one to see if it would get used. For everyday stuff they are brilliant, i too have button watch TV, this will turn on, TV,Sky,Amp then switch display back on the remote to sky controls. From start to finish mine took 20 mins to set up, thats TV,Sky DVD, Amp and Macros.

Mine is a One For All Kameleon, have both V1 and V2 just to compare and they are both brilliant, got one at auction for £13, so well worth it to try out ;)

For setting up the surround sound and other more complicated set up i will alwasy go back to the original denon remote

Andy

Thanks for the replies.

I was actually thinking about the one for all Kameleon which -=BAF=-AXE mentioned and might give that one a try.

The other one I'd seen which looked good was the Cambridge Audio M1.

I have the harmony 525, and it's in a different league from the kameleon. The kameleon is great if you want just the basic controls but the lcd section on the harmony and th pc integeration and programmability make it far better if you want anything more than the basics.

^^

Agreed as pink says, mine is used everyday for general stuff (and is Mrs approved its that easy to use), which its perfect.
If you want to replace EVERY function on your originals then you need to go
the harmony route!

expensive though.

I've got a sunwave src-3000 touchscreen and its a joy to use. picked it up for £35. Much better than the mosaic i have.

i just cant justify spending 5 times this price of the sunwave on another remote.

My 525 was only £49inc. So hardly 5 times the price of that sunwave. Bear in mind the software and configuration for all the harmony range is the same and is web server based so if you upgrade the remote you can just dload your existing config to it. So really all your getting with the more expensive harmonies is a better lcd screen, ie colour on some models.

I have the harmony 885 & 525.

Cant fault the 525 for value for money in all honesty, 885 does a little more but you would struggle to justify the extra cost.

would highly recommend the harmony range (I also have a pronto but that doesn't get used any more after using the logitechs).

yeah like the 885 that was mentioned in this thread. I'm getting tired of people on these forums jumping down my throat without actually taking 5 second to think about it  cheapest i can find the 885 - £125 + P&P.

Not jumping down your throat at all, the 525 was also mentioned in this thread prior to your post which I should point out did not make any specific reference to any other remote than the sunwave, so how the heck was I supposed to know you meant the 885. Anyways my point was you can get a significantly better remote than the sunwave for only £14 more. Maybe if ya up the beta blockers mate the paranoia may subside and you'll realise not everything is a personal attack and you can put the rolleyes to bed.

like i said, 5 seconds to think about it. It should have been obvious i was talking abotu the model that costs £125, not the cheaper one.

I am just about to start playing around with my Harmony 688, hoping that it can handle multiple dvd players as I have a dvd/hd recorder and an upscaling player.

Will let you all know how i get on.

Personally I prefer the looks of the harmonies to the Sunwave, and for £15 more its a bargain - just wish they were rechargable via usb
