University Accommodation (University Of Nottingham)

Well done mate. You will love the campus.

Like others have try the campus 14. Start at the ark (union) and work your way around all the campus bars ending up at the ark again (maybe). Ive never completed it because ive had to take mates home

Lincoln isn't too far from the main library (hallward), but you will be based in the sciences library (george green) around the sciency bit. All other slacker degrees spread out across the rest of the campus :p

Admin at the uni are sooo bad it's unbelivable. I won't even go into it, but they won't lift a finger to help you and will never pass any info between departments.

Also get out into the town for the student nights at certain clubs ! Can't tell you whats on this year as the nights change between different venues. Us older students just follow where the freshers go as the freshers week nights give a good indication which places will be best throughout the year.
Most importantly, get your ass and everyone you know to BZR. Cracking bar by the castle that has 'tripples 4 singles'..... ~£2.70 for a triplpe smirnoff and mixer. You won;t ever leave that place sober :D

If you have any questions about the uni, or especially the nightlife, add me on msn (my ocuk username @hotmail.com) and il sort you out. O b.t.w im going into my 4th year masters in materials engineering :)

Slightly OT, but can anyone that's still at Nottingham now tell me if the Buttery/Ark/whatever it's called now is still really crap?

What a poor excuse for a student union bar that was when I was there.

I popped over a few months back and it still is rather naff - but still good for summer drinking sitting outside enjoying the "view" ;)

Probably doing a C14 later this year for old times sake. Hall bars are still good for a cheap drink and you won't believe how much Nightingale Hall has changed

Shh, don't tell everyone about that place, it gets crowded enough as it is :p

Yup, it still sucks :( Trent's union bar really does wee all over ours... but I guess their uni blows, so :p

I don't think you can do Campus 14 anymore seeing as they are turning at least 2 of the bars into Continental cafes last time I checked.

"Us older students just follow where the freshers go as the freshers week nights give a good indication which places will be best throughout the year."

That's possibly the worst advice ever :p You saying Ocean, Oceana, Mode etc are the best places to go?

BZR is pretty good, but to be honest, just get yourself to the Lace Market: Bluu Bar, Brass Monkey, Pitcher & Piano, The Living Room, Saint's Bar etc. Best area in Nottingham. Also get yourself to a Detonate (there's one on September 29th this month on Friday, Friction and Scratch Perverts) at Stealth. Some awesome drum n bass stuff going down there, and also get yourself along to Blueprint for more of the same. Bar Schnapps is good for 3-4am when you are drunk as anything and don't mind going into possibly the dirtiest bar in Nottingham. I don't know how cheap/expensive it is as I've never been sober enough to remember a price in there :p

The Ark is UTTERLY ****. I think I went there about three times in my first year and only when forced to. Don't stick on campus, there's SO much better stuff in town, you really are wasting your time on campus other than in the first few weeks to get to know people. Trent Uni bars are damn good haha, even with The Tone Club (or whatever it's called) where they have live music. One of my mates bands played there last term, was wicked.

Basically, get yourself into town and explore. And more often than not, the stuff the university will try to take you to, and encourage you to go to, will be dire. Get out there, get to know people, and you'll have a much better time than in goddamn cheese clubs. Also, get a job if you can, in a good bar (not in a university bar), you will meet people not at the university, make very useful contacts, and generally be much better placed than your standard first year.

An alternative to uni run accomodation would be the newly built Exchange building in Nottingham city center. I'm staying there over the UPP/Uni run places as they offered me more space and facilities than a UPP one did.

For example, I'm paying £135 a week for a self contained flat, but that's fully furnished. They provide a TV should you want it, along with the basic Sky package, which can be upgraded for an extra montly cost. Every room is also wired to the CCTV circuit so you can see who's knocking on your door before you go open it.

There are single rooms available which are pretty nifty too, and being smack-bang in the middle of the city center is great as you save a lot on transport costs going out etc. It's right behind Oceana, home of the best uni night imo.

Google for 'the exchange nottingham' for more info :)

Problem with that though is that in the first year I think it's much better to live amongst your fellow students otherwise it's much harder to get to know people as half the socialising is the late night parties in the halls etc.

Edit: Just looked at the website, seems to be a complete student thing so I guess that's better so I'm not sure many first years will have heard of it regardless (I've never heard of it, it does look very nice though).

The fact that it's now mixed is change enough!

Unfortunately when I was there I was stuck in an all male Cripps Hall :(

Yeah, it's purpose built for students. I believe it's only been open to students for a year now, so not many people have heard of it or stayed there. They've just finished off the brand spanking new second phase of it, aptly named 'The Exchange - Phase Two' :D. I honestly can't say how many first years are there as I'm the only person out of all my friends that is staying there. The other major non-uni halls (Victoria Halls and the Glasshouse) are pretty popular amongst first and second years, but I'm not sure if they're available to Notts Uni students. Worth a look either way :)

I meant for the run of the mill club nights. I doubt that many freshers will be looking for the nice bars over in the lace market and hockley. I for one love dogma and go there most wednesdays to see the live band and enjoy a good dance with some very tasty ladies.

I heard that too, and what a **** idea it is. I think the uni is trying to get students away from the C14 and **** soc mentality. C14 FOR THE WIN :D

Right the following of freshers trends to clubs. In my 2nd year people went to jaks religously !!!!! Awesome night !!!! But 3rd year the place just became dead, and the few times we did go itwas clearly just older students in there. The attention seemed to move to faces which is overpriced and just not that great.

Ye the ark is rrap, and they always say that it's going to be redone. And DON'T diss cheese clubs. Friday night ocean was the highlight of most peoples weeks. Great night even though ocean was a sticky, hole :p It just had something sooo great about it.

AS a fresher just go out as much as you can and explore (like carzy said). There are soo many great places to go out, and a vast array of different scenes for you to become apart of. I love DnB now but have never been to demo or detonate etc. Mostly because of seen some mates the day after, and it takes them days to recover from it. SOme of them because of certain pills that are consumed  It seems as though the hardcore DnB heads go there with a bottle of water and some tabblets and just dance around off their faces all night. That does not seem enjoyable.

If you don't drop then you'll recover like any other night. Detonate's are awesome, it's great having people tryna buy chewing gum off me for silly amounts of money (I always carry loads with me). And it's all about hardcore dnb!

And I'm sorry but cheese clubs are actually a putrid mess which have no place in a night out, ever. Cheese is the vilest most irritating form of club/music, and there is absolutely no point in time when I will ever enjoy it.

I love DnB but am still a noob in the grand scheme of the things. I think detonate is the way to go. Isn't it held at garvy ?

I enjoyed the detonate tent at the summer party, but missed pendulum, and people gave up going to the wharahouse after party bcos they were tired. Tired ffs !

Not after 4 litres of scrumpy and some wyburowa :D:D:D

I go for the female of the species and to be with mates. Dancing is soo hard to cheese music though. Just people screaing out the lyrics at the top of their voices.

Q4T, the only reason I used to go to "The Zone" (RIP) Dancing to cheese isn't so hard when you're drunk enough and there's always somebody as bad at dancing and/or making a fool of themselves for you to be noticed :D

Pendulum were sub-standard at the Summer party, Bailey was probably the best of the night. There is a club night held at Marcus Garvey I believe, but it ain't Detonate. Detonate is at the end of every month at Stealth.

And the girls at cheese clubs are repulsive braindead idiots. (sweeping generalisation, but true in my experience). Oh, and drinking Scrumpy? Definitely not haha, give me a decent Honeysweet Sour, Mule or Martini any day over that kind of nasty ****!

I'm afraid retarded dancing has its home at a DnB night.

Fortunately, for me anyway, my nights are/were restricted to Rock City/Cookie Club/Obsession(O'Reillys)/The Irish/The Social and once in a while The Rescue Rooms. Never realy been one for DnB bar when friends have dragged me there.
