University Induction: What to expect?

Well, as titled, I've got all my induction dates and times through the post this morning. I'm just wondering what to expect from it. How long it lasts, what it involves etc. I know that I could just ask the student mentors these types of questions but I'd much rather hear it from you guys. :)

Also, included with my induction dates was some financial information. Now, I've already sent off my student finance papers and everything has been sorted with loans, however there was mention of a £1900 non-repayable learning grant from the Welsh Assembly. I am Welsh and I'll be studying in Wales so it looks like I'll be able to claim that grant. I just wanted to double check this though as the Student Loans company are already lending me £1700 towards course fees, does this mean I am still able to claim the grant even though I'm having a loan towards course fees?

I had two - one where they plonked a lot of students in a big hall and the big wigs say Welcome, etc etc, how different it is to sixth form, etc etc, you've got to work hard under your own supervision, etc etc. They also had a little "play" with 2nd and 3rd year students who talked about their experiences so far - a British student, an overseas student, a mature student.

The second one was given in the department by the department head who explained about the course and assigned us our tutors. The tutors then took us on a tour of the building.

Let's just say I was glad when they were over and I could head off to get a pint. :D
 
I imagine it will be a lot of boring talks, followed by some meeting your coursemate games. SUre it will be a good laugh though!
 
How are we meant to know? Each department of each University is different!

I'd assume you fill out a bit of paperwork, pick any optional modules and figure out your timetable. After that it's freshers week so screw uni work and get partying!

Enjoy it. Time at Uni goes far too quickly :(
 
Trying to get into over-full venues at first then slowly being split down into the sub groups that will be clser to the class members you will have. Talks about health and safty, uni policy on everything from race to coursework submission, talks from heads of units that you will be taking, and getting to know your eventual course-mates, you also get (probably) course materials for the first semester.

It is boring and confusing on occasion but dont miss any of it as you might miss something important like course notes. If you miss notes during induction it can take forever to get them because they often run out after induction, this will leave you at a disadvantage in sessions until you can get hold of a set of notes.

Best bit though, getting to know people, make friends you might have to work with these people.
 
It basically involves maybe enrolment, and a truck load of useless, boring talks from a variety of people...was a waste of time for me!
 
When I went to Aberystwyth <mumble> years ago, it mainly involved meeting 2nd/3rd years and visiting as many of the town pubs as we could manage :)

Things may have changed, though - the above is probably now against EU Health & Safety legislation, as there was falling down involved!
 
Thanks for all the info. :) I'll give the student mentors an E-Mail and see what they can tell me about it. Seems like there's a few different experiences here.
 
Well the rugby club induction at my uni involved being naked with a toilet roll up your bum which was on fire and you then had to crawl through the cordon of death where the other people..........you get the picture, best stop there.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that wasn't the official induction unless your university doubles as a porn studio.

Mine wasn't terribly exciting - the one in the university was a lot of people sitting around trying to make small talk and not look too nervous while doing so. However just get to know your coursemates/flatmates quickly and enjoy your time there - be aware of course that not everyone you meet in the first few weeks you'll want to spend lots of time with. :)
 
I went with my gf to hers (she's odd, don't ask. we didnt tell anyone i wasnt going to that uni), and it was basically like speed dating around the campus. She had a pretty good idea of the people she was looking forward to taking classes with when she started her first day of lectures... so i'd say it's a worthwhile effort.
