University IT student placements in Northumberland

Im in my second year at uni and in the process of looking for placements to undertake in the summer, but im not having much luck. Im studying computing studies so i need to find a placement that is IT related.
Ive been looking at the placements that our uni placement team have posted and most are down the country, which is not where i want to be.

Does anyone know of any companies in Northumberland or Newcastle area that take on students?

Its not quite Northumberland, but I did my placement at Nestlé in York a couple of years ago, they might be looking....

York is a bit further then what i wanted to go. There are so many good placements out there its just the location thats the problem. I did apply for sanofi-aventis up here in Alnwick near where i live, but i didnt get it so now im having to try and find other placements that are preferably within Northumberland.

Why is location a problem?

You'll be very lucky to find a placement near where you live...often lucky to even get a placement at all.

I'm on my work placement for my 3rd year of uni at the moment, 110 miles from home. :)

location is a problem because i have responsibilities, and because transport is a major issue.

Im wondering how many people do actually succeed in getting a placement, and more to the point i want to no what happens if you dont get one!!

Worse case scenario you could skip the placement, and go onto level 3, presumably by 'switching' course to a similar one that does not require a placement for graduation.

We're all in the same boat mate (Business Studies) :)

Well im happy with my course, its just preferred that since its a sandwich course that you do a placement but i dont think it matters if u dont do one, u just wont gain the experience. Worst thing that can happen is that il just have to go straight through to my final year!

Anyone got any positive feedback, maybe some companies that do uni placements around Newcastle?

I was hoping to go to SAGE but they don't do placements :(

I don't know anyone who got a dcent placement around Newcastle when I was there doing Business Studies.

Probably the best general placement employer there is Procter & Gamble and I'm not sure what their IT side is like.

Your other issue is that it is pretty late in the year for applying.

I ended up in Stuttgart.

Just thought - Pfizer have a place outside Morpeth (used to be JD Searle) making Neutrasweet) that might be worth a try. I heard abut a year ago that it was closing and loads of folks got made redundant, but it's still there I think.

The thing is though, many local placements post for placements at this time of the year so really its not too late, its now just a case of finding a one that you think would suit you best.

Ive tried looking at P+G but that site is a little confusing, especially on the IT side!

Not sure if I'm reading this right, but I'd apply for as many as you can.

I made loads of applications and had about 5 interviews before I was offered and accpted Hewlett Packard.
 
Well ive already had one interview, didnt get that.
Ive applied for 2 others so im hoping i hear something back from either of those. Basically, im applying for as many local ones as i can and hope for the best!
Well at least u got in at HP!!

If you are in an IT degree, DO NOT turn down the chance to do a placement!! It makes you 10X more employable when you finish uni... I went from Bristol to York (Over 200 miles!) for my placement! It is 100% worth it though- there is no way I would have got my job without a placement and I learned a huge amount!

Il apply for as many placements as i can and if i get accepted for one of them then that would be great! but if i dont, then at least i can say ive tried and il have no choice but to go through to my final year! il just be minus the whole industrial experience and i agree that it will be harder to get a job once ive graduated, but theres nothing i can do about that except to keep trying!

BrenOS will probably agree as he has first hand experience IIRC but P&G do a placement which is meant to be excellent. If you're applying for this september though I think you're too late. Might be wrong though.

BeatMaster - Working at Sage in the IS department would be no different to working for any IS department, it's pretty bog standard and the only other department of interest for you would be R&D and being a software house having people on placements in R&D isn't a great idea. It's no real loss though mate, somwhere like P&G would be much better.
 
Most of the placements are looking for students to start as early as june, others can be a bit later.

Il keep my fingers crossed that other placements become available.

Cheers :) Shall have to begin looking into P&G, I can never catch BrenOS on MSN though :( I would like to work for SAGE maybe in the future, seem a nice company to be part of :)
