If you're academic enough it's a great use of 3 or more years. Going to a decent uni with good teaching is a fantastic experience, and one that should be done when young imo. There's nothing saying you can't do it later, but I don't think I'd want to go back when I was older. It would seem like taking a step backwards and you wouldn't have as much fun I think.
Going to a mediocre or poor uni just because someone says you should is a bad idea if you don't particularly want to go.
As much as it sucks to have to effectively delay your life in some respects, a degree is becoming almost a necessity to get your nose ahead in the job market as so many people do them now.
Personally, I'm at uni in my 3rd year or 4, and really enjoying it. I don't think I want to pursue my subject as a career, but it's certainly not a waste of time, and the teaching and people are great. I can still do anything I want with my life afterwards, and I'll still only be 22!
If in doubt, I'd say do it, as you may regret never trying later on. Then, if it doesn't work out, at least you gave it an honest shot.
