University Remarking (Rights-esque stuff)

Right, this is going to be quite hard to explain due to my uni using stupid non-standard marking systems etc. Basically grades start at A16 and go down.. A15, A14, B13, B12, B11, C10 etc etc. An A is a 1st, a B is a 2:1, C a 3rd etc.

Now for one of my modules (out of 9) I got a D6 which is poor - was a theory essay and my dissertation proposal, both of which I got a D6 for. It was marked by someone I haven't even heard of and apparently they offered my feedback sessions regarding them but god knows how (most comms are done by uni email and I have nothing there). I'm in contact with one of my lecturers asking about getting them remarked but I was just wandering what my 'rights' are on the matter. Am I entitled to have them remarked by another member of staff or is it up to the uni?

It may seem petty, but if it gets bumped up to a C8 (which is still ) then it'll put my years average to a high 2:1 instead of a middle\low one and so obviously could have quite a big effect on my final degree grade.

Cheers in advance :)

Is this your final year?

As if it doesn't effect your overall mark then it wont matter (i.e. putting you up a grade)

But you can get them remarked but it might cost you.

Your well within your rights to ask for it to be remarked. I have done for a bit of coursework which I knew I was right on and the Phd student had marked it wrong.

I guess it would depend on the uni if they allow someone else to remark it or not. Pretty harsh if they say not.

imo it depends if you feel its wrong that your work was marked by an outside source (outside as in you havent met them) and if by doing so you were unfairly marked.

The uni is entitled to do what they like, but its worth remembering you arn't just a student, you are a customer of the university (we pay enough after all) so if you feel the uni has done you a diservice then absolutely make it known.

Similarly, if you deserved the grades you got then im afraid all i can say is suck it up and take it on the chin.

Right is right, but it works both ways.

It's not my final year Kahn (2nd), but my grades this year will count towards my final degree. And if I get a low 1st next year, then my overall degree will be a 2:1. Whereas if this module gets remarked to a C8 (just 2 higher and still crap) then I'll get a 1st overall. If it's up to the uni then I guess I'll have to wait for my lecturers response and get back to you!

and remember if its re-marked you could get an even lower score.

I always thought that course work was second marked anyway, guess not eh. (may have just been my uni)

Like I said if it was your final then it wouldnt matter but saying hot its your second talk to your tutor and ask them to remark it (it helps a lot if your friendly with them)

Final year marks are invigulated (normally just big projects and dissertations), it is normally a PhD student who couldn't care less about you tho.

Indeed - also not every piece gets moderated (more like 25%).

I requested one of my essays to be remarked this year as I just did not agree with what the examiner had said. I'm still waiting on it though.
