University/Student Questions

That's the weird thing. I am not what I'd call 'dependent', I mean I pay my Mom rent and money for food etc etc but they asked for my Mom's income documents. Fair enough I thought so I got her to compile all of her income forms to send off but on the day when I was going to post them I got an email from SFE with my 'final decision for finance'. I don't know why they said I have to send my Mom's paperwork if they assessed me regardless...

Well you live with her, that'll be why. But if you ticked the independent box and provided evidence, then someone wasn't paying much attention. It seems these are being processed in a hurry by an insufficient amount of staff.

So the first year grant takes my first year of uni earnings (if any) into consideration. Then the second year grant takes into consideration any money I earned whilst working during the first year?

Think i've got my wires crossed?

I don't know how it works if your parents income isn't considered. For a dependent student, the loan is always based on their parents p60s for the previous year - it's an assumption of earnings for the coming year. Obviously the situation is different for a first year student with no parents or partners wage to consider, so it may be based on your last years p60 or it may be assuming you no have 0 income.

I was asked for income details for 2007-8.
