Following on from previous threads I thought I would start the 2018 thread.

Post in here to tell us about what you're doing, where and what you feel about it. Feel free to post questions, seek advice or provide answers for fellow students.

I'll get the ball rolling.

I've just started a Ph.D (on Monday) at Lancaster where we'll be investigating the use of VR within education to teach programming concepts. Primarily we'll be investigating interaction paradigms and what is the minimum framework required for it to be effective. We'll also look at creating a toolkit where teachers can import existing resources into the VR space to cut down time required to build lessons. We also want to look at what AR can provide as well, but we're pretty much all agreed the cost of such devices puts AR out of reach of most educational institutions, which as a result means we'll also be focusing on Oculus Go, Oculus Quest and the Unity development environment.

First few days have gone ok, got my desk space sorted (lovely view over the Trough of Bowland), PC setup up and configured. Keeping a lid on my impostor syndrome is a challenge so we'll have to see how that goes! Commute from North Fylde is going to get old really quick as well, but I'm hoping to WFH a couple of days a week to alleviate that. Got 6 hours teaching (limit in the faculty is 6 hrs) so I think that should be manageable - term time only ofc.

So, how's everyone's freshers week going?
