Brethren,

FYI, relevant specs are Gigabyte UD5 + Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I have been getting the below notification every time I login to Windows:

After clicking on the balloon I am presented with this:

Device Manager also obviously reports this as an Unknown Device and when I double-click the offending item this is what I am shown:

Now, if I click Update Driver on the driver tab it tells me that "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".

I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do - although saying that, it is not really causing any problems other than the annoyance of the notification during login.

It is odd because all of my connected USB devices work properly despite this notification. Also strange is the fact that I have unplugged all USB devices and still Device Manager reports the Unknown Device. I have looked for obstructions in any unused ports (I have read that fluff etc. can cause problems) but they are all clean. It is like Windows is seeing a phantom USB device!

I have installed my mobo's latest chipset drivers (from the official website) and have ran Driver Genius, both to no avail.

Does anyone have any idea what I can try to get rid of this? I have done some Googling but I cannot find an answer.

Cheers

Have you tried uninstalling the USB controllers via device manager and rebooting. Windows will pick them up again and it may solve your problem

Do you mean uninstalling all the USB controllers? i.e. all the items below beginning Intel(R)?

Or just the individual item that is highlighted as Unknown? If you mean the latter then I have already tried this and the notification just reappears at the next login.

I'm sorry for my ignorance but wouldn't this prevent me from using my mouse or keyboard to login at the next reboot?

If you can't get if fixed how about right click/disable instead until you can find a drive that'll sort it?

I did actually use this method of disguising the issue for a few days (and may very well go back to it if there are no other suggestions) but it ate away at me knowing that the problem was still there, albeit slightly less annoying i.e. no notifications.

I guess I just don't particularly like being beaten by a bunch of 1's and 0's! (assuming that it is software related)

Have you got anything plugged into the internal USB ports ie the internal 8 pin connetors, say the ports on the front of the case? If so then try unplugging them, could be that the case ports have developed a fault.

You sir, are a genius!

I had my wireless USB dongle plugged into one of the case's front panel USB headers (I have had it plugged into both of the available headers on the front panel at different times). It was functioning correctly so assumed that they were not the problem. I have now moved it, as suggested, to one of the back panel connectors, and reapplied the fix above (unistalled all USB controllers and rebooted), hey presto - it seems to have done the trick!

One thing that is confusing me though is that all of the ports that are connected to the internal 8-pin connectors (2 x front panel of case + 1 x internal Multi-card reader) all work if I connect a device to them. Bizarre.

Anyway, thanks very much for all your help chaps.

Until the next time.
