Just got a call 2 minutes ago from an unknown number, and I heard nothing but a beep occuring every 3 seconds, like an answering machine

Any idea what this could be or has anybody had it before?

Yup, I had a similar thing in my old place. Fax. Ever got it sorted, it stopped after a while by itself.

Block the number? Google says fax machine also.

ROFL... Just goes to show you how things have changed that young folks have to Google it to know this is a fax machine :D

The reason it kept calling you is most Fax machines are setup to redial a few times to keep retrying to send the fax.

It's a digital representation of your future self, trying to warn you of your impending doom.

Call customer service for the provider of your phone line to tell them about this, and they'll either give you the number or put you through to their malicious calls department who should be able to tell the person trying to call you to stop.

I had a similar problem during the last change in dialling codes, but that is because some idiots were using the newer code before it had been fully implemented and weren't adding the 020 part into the number they were dialling thus the last 0 in the number they were dialling was being disregarded and the call was being put through to my number.

It kept starting up a few hours later too D:

Well it stopped after a few hours, so will have to wait and see if it happens, otherwise i'll do this

When we moved into our house in 2010 the phone number we were given by BT was a number that had previously been a fax number for a local company. They had gone bust but still came up on web searches with our number listed as their fax. We used to get fax calls at all times of day and night, signed up with the Fax Preference Service (maybe you could do this) rang companies back to ask them to take our number off their records, but lots of machines must be set to autodial and send marketing faxes etc overnight so we would get them at 2am, 4am... Really annoying.

Eventually BT changed our number, after ringing them a couple of times and trying what they'd suggested. The woman said it was getting harder and harder to reuse numbers as so much out-of-date info is still available online. My dad works for Openreach and looked it up for us, the number had been out of use since 2003 when it was given to us. It was him who found out who it had previously been registered to, so we could look it up and pass the info on to BT.

Now our phone number is only 1 digit different to a very busy local company so instead we get loads of phonecalls asking for Suma wholefoods instead!
