Guys,i'm getting a new gaming laptop at Xmas,im looking to play online games Like BF5/Cod/PUBG etc etc....anyways my Mobile contract is about to end also and i'm looking into getting Unlimited Data Plan so i can game when i'm away from WiFI Spots (camping/caravan).

Ive never Used or Setup anything like this from my phone,is it easy to do? How Is the connection most times? Do any of you guys game this way?

Is there anything i need to ask or know of before i purchase an Unlimited Data plan for next 2 years?

Thanks

I think the 4G latency thing is a bit of a myth. While it does obviously vary depending on area, sub-30ms isn't an uncommon achievement.

Three have recently started included general tethering in their data allowance. They still offer unlimited packages.
Interesting they've put that back in. They took it out a while back because people took the pee running their home on a cheap data package.

I have a 4G Router and have tested it at various locations in the house. Best place for the router and upgraded antennae is the loft. Only way to improve further is a direction antennae on the chimney point directly at the nearest EE cellsite.

Averages of my findings...

Downstairs: 17Mb/14Mb/80ms
Upstairs: 40Mb/20Mb/50ms
In Loft: 70Mb/50Mb/35ms
Outside Antennae: 80Mb/65Mb/29ms

It is very very varied - at home 4G is like gaming on ADSL with interleaving on - IIRC base latency is around 26ms or something with ~34-36ms in game and rarely any real amounts of packetloss or drops and while irrelevant for gaming speeds rival FTTC. But I don't have to go far away and latency jumps up to 75ms. Other places I've tried it there were constant jumps into the 100-200ms range (or even worse) or several disconnections an hour, etc. despite a strong signal.

3’s realistically the only game in town at present without paying over the odds (Vodafone 100 may be worth a look - i’ve not checked). Most providers exclude tethering, you can usually bypass this, but it’s a breach of ToS and if you make a mistake, expect your service to be pulled. Those that do offer ‘always on’ data rate limit after xGB usually and again will usually exclude tethering. Caravans can also be problematic with mobile/Wi-Fi signals (they are basically an aluminium can) and lots of them in close proximity doesn’t help at all, most decent sites have wi-fi on site.

Far be it for me to tell you how to live your life, but do you really want to go away and play games while camping/caravanning? 100% your choice of course.

Yes only two networks gives you unlimited tethering and that is virgin media mobile and three but I now know as of late about threes policy of unlimited tethering but to get the deal on virgin which has unlimited tethering you need to be a virgin media customer already which would be either a home cable TV customer or cable broadband.

But being realistic i see you will go with three because the virgin deal requires you to be a virgin customer already.

Please take a look at the link below.

Anyways as for pings I think it is not suitable for gaming but you can get 20 to 50 or 70 ms but it can spike upto 300ms.

But yeah it all depends on signal strength.

Anyways if you are a virgin media customer or you know someone that is a customer, expect to pay £25 a month for 12 months on a contract.

Here is a link below for the virgin SIM only deals.

Anyways it would be best if you bought an outside 4g antenna which would give you better speeds and pings especially if your inside a caravan.

Edit

It seems three also do unlimited tethering correct me if I am wrong.

Edit

Well according to this link below three also allow unlimited tethering.

Edit

Yep as far as I know three and virgin offer unlimited tethering which is what you are after.

I took a Vodafone sim all around Europe and gamed on my laptop at times. It works fine on 4g, no different to being in a house.

Get an antenna on the roof of the vehicle though, it makes a huge difference. In 9 months all around the Iberian peninsula, I could count on 1 hand having zero signal and I went all over the place.

Your main issue when away is without hookup my gaming laptop uses 120w - when gaming.

Thanks for the info,Id be in a caravan a lot with a gaming laptop...what kind of 4G antenna would be appropriate to buy.

Think im gonna go Three with Unlimited data and Unlimited Tethering,i need an updated phone so im getting the s8 with unlimited everything for £38.

ahhh ok,the reception is pretty good for 4g where i am anyways....im just looking for a good latency/ping for gaming, and if there are ways to make that better thats great
